Beginning by saying he hoped this would be his last or almost last press conference on Winter Storm Enzo, Mayor Whitmire Wednesday termed the entire operation successful in dealing with the arctic blast.
"No fatalities due to traffic accidents, we've had no fatalities to carbon monoxide," Whitmire said "We had 1,300 individuals stay with us in our warming centers."
No one was turned away from the warming centers, he said. "Fonde hit its maximum numbers yesterday and I was contacted and I said 'There's no such thing in weather like this as reaching capacity.'"
"I want to caution everyone there is still some mobility issues. There's still ice on some of our bridges and roads. So slow down. Be cautious."
Houston's airports began operating at 9 a.m. this morning, he said. Of the 10 shelters now open, he said there would probably be two open on Thursday.
The one area Whitmire said needs more attention is is mental health. Despite the bitter cold and personal appeals including some by himself, Whitmire said some homeless people refused to come into shelters, preferring to stay out on the streets..Â
