Host Conan O'Brien explained the origin of the memorable bit: "It was all Adam"
Conan OāBrien isnāt sure yet if heād host the Oscars again: āHey, ask me in a few months,ā he told Entertainment Tonight, though he added that after the show he was āvery happy, and Iām never happyā¦. The audience was really good.ā In the same interview, OāBrien revealed how Adam Sandler ended up doing the bit where he showed up at the Oscars dressed to play basketball, in a hoodie and baggy shorts.
During his opening monologue, OāBrien called out Sandlerās outfit: āYouāre dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m., Adam.ā
āYou know what, Conan? I like the way I look because Iām a good person. I donāt care what I wear or donāt wear! Did my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers?ā Sandler said to OāBrien, before (supposedly) storming out of the event, and before telling the crowd, āYou are all welcome to join me for a game of five on five basketball.ā
It started with a different comedic concept, OāBrien told ET. āAdam and I are old friends,ā he said. āAnd I called him up, and he liked the idea. And then he said, āI have another idea.ā And it involved him dressing in the way that heās most comfortable, which, of course, was his idea, because he doesnāt want to put on a tux. And then his idea was so great. That was all Adam. Adamās the king.ā
Sandler presumably also added the capper to his appearance, when he approached a yellow-suited TimothĆ©e Chalamet in the audience, hugged him, and exclaimed, āChalamet!ā
