Chris OâDowd has told a hilarious story on RTÃâs Late Late Show, sharing how he ended up in France for a number of months after being selected as a Late Late Show audience member when he was in college.
On the Valentineâs Day special, Patrick Kielty was joined by Hollywood star Christina Hendricks and Irish actor OâDowd who chatted about their new series Small Town, Big Story, which is set in rural Ireland.
During the interview, Chris revealed that he had in fact been on the show once before when Gay Byrne was a host, resulting in him ending up in France for four months.
âI was sat, probably around where this lady is here, five rows back,â Chris OâDowd told Patrick about his experience on the Late Late Show in 1998.
âI was a student in UCD down the road at the time, and I was in the student bar of a Friday evening, and one of the researchers come, and they try and take students out of the bar, bring them here to make it look like it's really cool to everybody who's watching at home, that itâs all young people in the audience.
âI'm sitting up in the audience. Gay Byrne is here, and he's giving out the stuff.
âIt's Easter time I think, Christy Moore is playing, and then finally he goes âand there's also a new boat going from Cherbourg to Rosslare four times a day, and we got tickets for everybody in the audience.â

âAnd so we had 16 tickets, there was four of us there and I'd say a month and a half and later, a day after the exams were over, we all hit it off, thinking it was really just going to be a little booze cruise, right? And we go to Cherbourg and come back and have a bit of craic.
"And I got there, and I'd never been to France, and I was like, âlads, have you tried the bread?â And I was like, âShall we go down to Paris, just for the day or two?â
âThe World Cup was starting, and it was in 98 in France. And so I said, âShould we go down for a couple of days?â And everybody said, âNoâ. So I went down on my own anyway, to Paris, and I ended up staying for four months.â
Comedy legend Steve Coogan was also on the show to talk about bringing Dr. Strangelove to the stage at Dublinâs Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. He also discussed his iconic character Alan Partridge and his journey to finally getting an Irish passport.
Stand-up star Katherine Ryan was also chatting about her Irish roots, her upcoming tour and the romantic twist that saw her marry her high school sweetheart two decades after they first met.
