Huge soap snubbed by BAFTA TV nominations in bold decision by bosses
Emmerdale has missed out on the chance of taking home a BAFTA TV award following a shock move by the ITV soap's bosses to withdraw themselves from the competition
One soap has missed out on a BAFTA TV nomination this year, in a huge blow. Emmerdale will not be up for a prestigious award at this year's ceremony.
Their soap rivals, Coronation Street, Casualty and EastEnders have all made it into the Best Soap Category. Earlier this month, it was revealed the soap had withdrawn its entry.

It came after writer Martin Fustes was found guilty of domestic abuse. In January, soap writer Fustes, 47, admitted to assaulting his partner, causing actual bodily harm and an offence of intentional suffocation.
He was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, 150 hours of unpaid work, 15 days of rehabilitation and a 26-session probation service domestic abuse programme in Hull Crown Court.
Emmerdale pulled its entry for the TV awards' best soap category in light of the writer's conviction. A spokesperson for the ITV soap told The Mirror "ITV and Emmerdale have taken the decision to withdraw the episode nominations from this year's BAFTA TV Awards. This is in consideration of developments in recent days involving a member of the scriptwriting team."
Fustes worked on Emmerdale for over ten years and contributed to domestic abuse storylines – including the soap's recent arc which saw Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) attend a group for survivors after escaping the abuse of husband Tom King.
A spokesperson for Emmerdale said that those on the soap were "shocked and appalled" to learn about Fustes' case. "Mr Fustes is a freelance writer and he has been informed that he will no longer be writing for Emmerdale," they said.
"Everyone at ITV and Emmerdale abhors domestic abuse, which is why we have been highlighting the issue in a major storyline over the last 12 months. The Emmerdale production team were not aware of these charges against Mr Fustes until we were alerted over the weekend."
Nominations for the Bafta TV Awards (and Bafta TV Craft Awards) are dominated by four big shows this year. Baby Reindeer tops the list with a total of eight nominations, followed by Mr Bates Vs the Post Office, Rivals and Slow Horses - which all have six.
But with 134 shows in total among the nominees, having a huge number is still no guarantee of a gong - as the stars and makers of The Crown discovered last year. They were nominated for eight awards but came away empty-handed on the night.
Last year, Casualty came out on top in a battle of the continuing dramas. They secured the award for Soap and Continuing Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards 2024.
The BBC medical drama fought off competition from Emmerdale and EastEnders to be voted best soap, while Coronation Street didn't even get a look in. For the second year in a row, Corrie was snubbed from the nominations and missed out.
It marked the second time Casualty has taken the prize, two years running, beating the soaps in the process.
