I found the 'best alternative' to Nutella that was almost £2 cheaper
We shopped in Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury's and found two jars we enjoyed almost as much as Nutella but one was a lot cheaper
Coffee and pancakes make the perfect start to a lazy Sunday morning in my household. We enjoy them topped with lemon and sugar and maple syrup but Nutella is always the winner with my kids.
The chocolate hazelnut spread is also delicious on toast, waffles, ice cream, crumpets and even porridge. However, at £3.65 a jar, it's pretty pricey. So I decided to buy Nutella alternatives from the supermarkets that do them to see if any were as good.
I picked up jars from Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, together with a jar of original Nutella, then whipped up some pancakes and got the kids to help me taste test them. They were more than happy to oblige and eagerly cracked open the golden seal on each jar to see what was inside.

Nutella
Nutella costs £3.65 for a 350g jar, which works out to £1.04 per 100g. Described as a 'unique recipe with an unmistakable hazelnut and cocoa taste', I knew this was going to be a tough one to match.
It's been around for more than 60 years and contains just seven ingredients - sugar, palm oil, 13% hazelnuts, skimmed milk powder, 7.4% fat-reduced cocoa, lecithins and vanillin (vanilla extract) and no hydrogenated fats, preservatives or colourings.
Per 15g serving, it contains 80kcal, 1.6g saturated fat, 8.4g sugars. This was super thick, which made it a little tricky to spread but it was fine as soon as it started to melt into the pancake, creating a layer of nutty, rich chocolate that was comforting and moreish. We gave it 5 out of 5 stars.
We tried chocolate hazelnut spreads from Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi to see how they compared with NutellaMorrisons Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
Morrisons Chocolate Hazelnut Spread costs £2.09 for a 400g jar, which works out to 52p per 100g - half the price of Nutella. It was made with sugar, palm oil, 13% hazelnuts, inulin, 8% fat-reduced cocoa powder, dried skimmed milk powder, whey powder, lactose, lecithins and flavouring.
Per 15g serving, it contained 85 kcal, 1.6g saturated fat and 6.9g sugars. This was really solid in the jar, which made it difficult to spread - much more so than Nutella. Even on a warm pancake, it barely melted, and just seemed to rip the pancake instead.
We could taste the hazelnuts but there wasn't such a strong chocolatey flavour. All in all, it was a bit disappointing. We gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Tesco Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
Tesco Chocolate Hazelnut Spread costs £1.69 for a 400g jar, which works out to 42p per 100g - price-matched to Aldi. Each tablespoon contained 82 kcal, 5.1g saturated fat and 7.9g sugars. It was made with sugar, rapeseed Oil, 13% hazelnuts, palm oil, 7% fat-reduced cocoa powder, dried skimmed milk powder, whey powder, maltodextrin, lecithins and flavouring.
This spread was noticeably darker than all the others upon opening. It wasn't as thick as the Nutella, which made it much easier to spread.
So, it was quite disappointing to find it really lacked flavour. I wondered if I hadn't been generous enough with my serving so I added more but I could still barely taste hazelnuts. I wouldn't bother again and gave it 1 out of 5 stars.
Nutoka Spread from Aldi
Nutoka Spread from Aldi costs £1.69 for a 400g jar, which works out to 42p per 100g. Made from sugar, rapeseed Oil, 13% hazelnuts, palm oil, 8% fat-reduced cocoa powder, skimmed milk powder, dried glucose syrup, lecithins and flavouring.
Per 15g serving, it contained 83 kcal, 1g saturated fat and 6.7g sugars. It was interesting that this had a lower sugar content as it was the only one to contain dried glucose syrup.
This looked most like the original - both on the jar labelling and name and the spread inside. Soft and easy to spread, it was packed with flavour. Slightly sweeter than Nutella, it wasn't exactly the same flavour as it was not quite as nutty but super chocolatey. We gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Budget product reviewsSainsbury's Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
Sainsbury's Chocolate Hazelnut Spread costs £2.25 for a 400g jar, which works out to 56p per 100g. It's made with sugar, rapeseed oil, 13% hazelnuts, palm oil, 7% fat-reduced cocoa powder, 6% skimmed cows milk powder, whey powder, lecithins and flavouring.
Each tablespoon serving contains 83 kcal, 5.2g saturated fat and 7.9g sugars. This had the strongest hazelnut flavour of all the supermarket own brand, which was really good.
It wasn't too sweet and had a nice aftertaste. It spread well, wasn't too thick and melted well onto the pancake. We gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
Overall verdict
Nutella was almost twice the price of the next expensive brand per 100g, which was Sainsbury's. It was interesting to see that most of the supermarket own brand spreads contained rapeseed oil and flavourings - unlike the Nutella. Morrisons was the only other jar not to contain rapeseed oil.
The Tesco jar (our least favourite) also included maltodextrin, a highly-processed starch. The Aldi and Morrisons jars contained slightly more cocoa powder, with the latter also containing inulin.
Flavour-wise, we enjoyed the Sainsbury's and Aldi jars almost as much as Nutella, which meant our overall winner was Aldi as it was 56p cheaper than Sainsbury's and almost £2 cheaper (£1.96) than the original Nutella. Bargain.
