ITV Coronation Street star dies aged 72 as family pay tribute

ITV Coronation Street star John Saint Ryan has died at the age of 72.
The star died on April 3rd surrounded by his family following a heart attack.

Article continues belowHi wife, Joyce, shared a statement on Facebook, which read: "I and our family want to let our friends know that John had a heart attack the evening of Thursday 3rd of April.

"We were with him at the hospital where the staff did everything possible but unfortunately he did not survive.

"We are absolutely heart broken. John wanted to aid medical research and donated his body, so there will not be a funeral.
"Later, we will arrange a celebration of his wonderful life. We are all fortunate to have known and loved this special 'Gentleman' as he has been described to me numerous times over the last couple of days."
Fans took to the comments to offer their support to the family, and share their sympathies, with one reading: "My deepest sympathies to John's family and close friends. I truly admired and respected John. He will be missed by many more than myself. Rest in peace John."

Another added: "Oh my heart breaks to read this. I'm so, so sorry for his family and friends - this is a hard loss. Huge condolences."
John was born in Burnley, Lancashire, in 1953 and became a martial arts teacher in the town.
However, the star started his career in showbiz via work as a stuntman, becoming the stunt double for Sean Connery in the film The Medicine Man.

John made his acting debut in G.B.H. in 1983 on Channel 4 before getting a small role in ITV's Emmerdale as Jameson.
This led him to the role he is known for today, Charlie Whelan in Coronation Street, between 1994 and 1995.
He was famously involved in a relationship with barmaid Bet Lynch, who enjoyed her time with Charlie after her separation from husband Alec.

John is survived by Joyce and his three sons.
