ITV GMB's Susanna Reid forced to apologise as show is hit with complaints
Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid was forced to apologise during Monday's edition of the ITV news programme after a guest made an 'inappropriate gesture'.
During this morning's broadcast of Good Morning Britain, host Susanna Reid had to issue an apology after a guest made an "inappropriate gesture" on live television.
While discussing the harrowing impact of the war in Ukraine with co-host Richard Madeley, they were joined by war correspondent John Sweeney, who was reporting from Kyiv.
John shared a poignant story about a Ukrainian man who had lost both arms and a leg in the conflict and how doctors had developed innovative technology to allow him to control a plastic arm using his muscles.
When asked about his views on Russian President Vladimir Putin, the man had responded with a defiant middle-finger salute, which John reenacted on-air. "And he gave Putin the finger. It made me cry," John recounted reports the Manchester Evening News.
Susanna immediately addressed the audience, stating: "I understand that you felt, personally, the power of that. We do have to apologise for that gesture on breakfast television. It's still considered a highly offensive gesture, John, and of course, there are children watching."

John expressed his regret, saying: "I'm very sorry, Susanna, I'm an old war reporter, sometimes I forget where I am."
Richard commended John for his apology, and Susanna empathised, acknowledging: "We know you're in the middle of a war-torn country in Ukraine and sometimes, of course, strong things are said, John."
Viewers of the show wasted no time hopping onto Twitter (X) to vent their feelings about a recent apology on the programme, with many voicing their irritation at what they deemed over-sensitivity.
One exasperated viewer remarked: "Ummmm another stupid apology? Come on woke #gmb ridiculous." Further stoking the debate, someone else commented: "Show men with arms and legs blown off and describe that in detail, show the devastation caused by war but DO NOT under any circumstances, show the bird, there are children watching. They can handle people being blown up but no hurty hand signs."
The discussion continued with a third post: "@GMB #GMB Incredible! Putin and his stooge Trump are trying to get their grubby hands on Ukraine, and all you can do is get worked up over a hand gesture! ! Get real! !"
Another chimed in, emphasising the day's controversial moment: "Prim and proper Susanna Reid tells off John Sweeney over a Ukrainian soldier who had lost multiple limbs in the war for using his prosthetic hand to make a 'finger gesture'."
