Is Elton John really retired or have we been played?
Elton John claimed two years ago that it was time for a quieter life. But he hasn't seemed to make good of that promise since, so was his 'retirement' a lie?

Cast your mind back just a few short years, and you’ll remember that Elton John was everywhere, waxing lyrical about how it was time for him to step back from the spotlight. We had no cause not to believe him, after all, with 32 studio albums under his belt – notwithstanding the musical soundtracks he’s penned – and perhaps the most indulgent career in all of show business. A quieter life seemed like it was calling.
As the last of those fireworks boomed over the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury after he concluded his triumphant farewell set, it really did seem like that would be the last we’d see of John. Following five seismic decades of musical rapture, what more could the man need? To the rest of the world, retirement for someone in their mid-70s seemed like a fair deal – all except John himself, that is.
Because despite his indignation a few years ago that this would be the end of the road, it seems the lure of new sonic heights – or, ahem, money – couldn’t keep the Rocketman away for too long. Following his recent Disney+ documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, where he collaborated with rock virtuoso Brandi Carlile on a special song by the same name, John has just announced a whole new album with the singer set to come out this April, making the ruse of retirement just a distant memory.
He has stuck to his promise in certain senses. His storming set at Glastonbury was indeed the last time punters got to see him perform live in the UK, with the seemingly never-ending Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour finally reaching its conclusion in Sweden in July 2023, two years later than planned firstly owing to pandemic chaos and then to John’s own health.
But in that vein, maybe it’s the latter point that’s giving John the motivation to keep sitting down at the piano a while longer. He’s made no secret of recent ageing health issues, and with other projects in the theatre realm not having taken off as expected lately, he probably realises time is of the essence if he wants to carry on doing what he does best.
Without wishing to make it sound like his days are numbered quite yet, it is true that the fabric of modern music wouldn’t be as colourful, flamboyant, or just as downright fun as it is without John having exploded into it. Let’s not lie – there’s also a less-than-subtle hint of ego at play here because if he is known for nothing else, the fact that John is his own biggest fan is not exactly a secret.
He may not be able to reach the high notes of days gone by any longer, but the millions who would still willingly scramble to see the legend live attests to the notion that John knows all too well – he is the king. Maybe it’s not so much of a surprise, when you consider this, that his retirement turned out to be a bit of bluster because, on his own terms, ‘The Bitch is Back’.
