Even when you’re expecting it, it still hurts! Fans were left horrified and heartbroken after Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) met his brutal demise at the hands of Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) at the end of the second episode of The Last of Us season 2.
While his death came as no surprise to players of the popular video game franchise, the timing did leave many wondering: What is going to happen for the rest of the season and is Pedro gone from the show forever?

What Happened Between Joel and Abby in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Episode 2? HBOAbby, a former Firefly, and her group – including Owen (Spencer Lord), Manny (Danny Ramirez), Nora (Tati Gabrielle) and Mel (Ariela Barer) – are camped out at an abandoned lodge near the Jackson survivor community when Abby awakens from a nightmare about her father’s death.
Episode 1 previously established she had embarked on a revenge mission to find and murder Joel for killing her father – a doctor who had been hoping to create a vaccine for the Cordyceps brain infection – when he rescued Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) at the end of season 1.
While outside searching for the Jackson patrol scouts, Abby accidentally falls down a hill and finds herself running for her life from a horde of Infected that had been partially buried in the snow – and she runs straight into Joel, who had been out on a patrol with Dina (Isabela Merced). Realizing who he is, Abby then lures both of them into a trap by convincing them to come back with her to the lodge to wait out a dangerous snowstorm that rapidly descended on the area.
However, when they get there, Abby quickly reveals her true intentions. She orders them to knock out Dina and then proceeds to torture Joel, first shooting him in the leg, then breaking his legs with a golf club.
Ellie and Jesse, who had also been on patrol when the snowstorm hit, had been desperately searching for Joel and Dina because they weren’t answering their radios. But by the time Ellie makes it to him, it’s too late.
Joel is clearly dying on the floor after being brutally beaten and Abby finishes it once and for all when she stabs part of a golf club through his neck.

In The Last of Us: Part II video game, his death scene is similar and there, sadly, is no coming back from either version. In fact, his death spurs on the main plot of the rest of the game – Ellie’s quest for vengeance against Abby.
Is Pedro Pascal Still on the Show?There are a number of flashbacks throughout The Last of Us: Part II video game that range from heart wrenching to heartwarming as they delve deeper into Joel and Ellie’s relationship over the past few years. At least one of those scenes has already been teased in trailers.

It’s expected Pedro will make several appearances throughout season 2 and potentially even season 3 as Ellie’s journey continues. Despite the promise of new Joel moments, Pedro himself said he was in “active denial” about his time on the show coming to an end.
“I realize this more and more as I get older, I find myself slipping into denial that anything is over,” he shared with Entertainment Weekly on April 20, 2025. “I know that I’m forever bonded to so many members of the experience and just have to see them under different circumstances but never will under the circumstances of playing Joel on The Last of Us. And, no, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it because it makes me sad.”
‘The Last of Us’ Showrunner Defends Joel’s DeathCraig Mazin, the show’s executive producer and co-showrunner – alongside Neil Druckmann – told USA Today that he knew people were “going to be upset” about Joel’s death, but he made no apologies.
“That’s sometimes how good drama goes,” he said at the time. “This was something that was always meant to happen. So much of the first season was, in a weird way, leading to this moment. And it’s upsetting.”
