Fans of HBO’s The Last of Us are in mourning after a shocking main character death in season 2, episode 2 on April 20, 2025. The gut-wrenching scene left viewers wondering if beloved cast member Pedro Pascal would be leaving the series. In Touch breaks down what fans can expect from the rest of the season.

Joel Miller Dies in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2, Episode 2

In the season 2 premiere on April 13, 2025, viewers met Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), who declares that she wants to kill Joel Miller (Pedro) out of revenge. In episode 2, it was revealed that her father was the Fireflies surgeon whom Joel killed while saving Ellie Williams’ (Bella Ramsey) life in the season 1 finale.

While staking out the Jackson, Wyoming, community where Joel and Ellie have been living, Abby accidentally woke up a horde of infected and was chased by the zombie-like beings — only to be rescued by Joel himself. She convinced Joel and his patrol partner, Dina (Isabela Merced), to go back to the lodge where Abby’s friends were waiting. There, Abby and her crew revealed their plan to kill Joel.

The heartbreaking and brutal death scene featured Abby shooting Joel in the knee before beating him with a golf club and her bare fists. Ellie tragically arrived just in time to see Abby fatally stab Joel with the broken nine iron.

Many fans were in denial at the end of the episode and questioned if Joel was really dead, hoping for some kind of resurrection or faked demise in a future episode. Unfortunately, based on The Last of Us Part II video game, which serves as the source material for season 2, and commentary from showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Joel’s death is permanent. However, that doesn’t mean fans won’t see him again.

Don’t worry, TLOU fans, Pedro’s not going anywhere. Both Craig and Neil have confirmed that, despite his death, Joel will continue to appear in season 2 via flashback scenes.

“This is where the story starts in earnest,” Neil, who wrote the video games, said on “The Last of Us” podcast after the episode. “But I will say that we do know there are some mysteries here, some gaps, in Ellie and Joel’s relationships. And I think this is a spoiler because we put a trailer out there with lots of shots in it. This is not the last that we will see of Joel.”

Meanwhile, Craig told TV Line that fans will see a “good amount” of scenes with Pedro and Bella together in season 2 “because we all want it” and because they’re an “iconic duo.”

“We do get to see them quite a bit together this season. And we also get to see interesting things happening with them — more, I think, than what we saw in season 1,” he added.

Craig concluded, “Season 1, it’s a beautiful relationship and a wonderful journey. But in its own way, it’s very simple. And this one is way more complicated — and, in its conclusion, just very resonant. It gives you a lot to think about and also has a beautiful note of hope running through it. So, on behalf of all the Bella-and-Pedro stans out there, I’m here to say: Yes. A good amount is heading your way.”
