From a love of hockey at Marlborough College to ski retreats in the Alps, the pair share their passions as well as their admirable slope style. But now, it seems, Pippa could follow in Catherine’s footsteps with a commitment to one of the Princess’s most treasured causes: early years education.
The younger Middleton sister and her hedge fund boss husband, James Matthews, have kicked off discussions with regard to opening a brand new childcare centre on their £1.5 million estate, as Richard Eden reports.
‘Bucklebury Farm is considering opening a nursery for children aged nine months to five years,’ the couple wrote online of their 72-acre home, welcoming ‘thoughts and suggestions’ from Berkshire locals.
Pippa and James bought the park – which is located around two miles from the Middleton family home, Bucklebury Manor – in 2022. Its petting zoo was a particular favourite of Prince George, who would be taken there by his grandmother Carole Middleton when he was young. Last year, it was revealed that James was due to open the farm’s lodge for ‘parties, events and Pilates’ – the former of course being the speciality of Carole Middleton in her ‘Party Pieces’ days.

If Pippa Middleton were to welcome a nursery onto the family estate, she would certainly have a font of advice from her sister, Catherine. The Princess of Wales is said to view early years education as her ‘life’s work’, and just yesterday her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood published the ‘Shaping Us Framework’, calling for increased awareness of our ‘social and emotional skills’ to combat ‘mistrust and misunderstanding’.
In a foreword to the frame work, the mother-of-three rallied readers to ‘build a more loving, empathetic, and compassionate society together,’ through increased focus on interpersonal skills, which Catherine called the ‘bedrock of any healthy, happy society’.
So committed is the Princess of Wales to the early years cause that she continued her work even while stepping back from public duties in the wake of her cancer diagnosis last year.
In May 2024, the Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood released a massive new report setting out the business case for prioritising early childhood. It has also announced several new initiatives, including funding for early years apprenticeships and leadership programmes, increased support for baby banks and creating welcoming spaces for families with young children.
Insiders confirmed that Kate was ‘across every aspect of the report, despite her illness.’ Speaking to MailOnline, a royal aide confirmed, 'The Princess of Wales was the driving force behind the business task force. She has been kept up to date since the inception of the task force and she has read the report and been briefed on it.
As she continued her slow return to public duties this year, after announcing that her cancer was in remission, Catherine followed in Princess Diana's footsteps by becoming royal patron for Tŷ Hafan, a children's hospice in South Wales, where she visited last week.

By the time David Matthews, father of Pippa’s husband James Matthews and Made In Chelsea socialite Spencer Matthews (who married Vogue Williams at Glen Affric in 2018), purchased the 10,000-acre estate in 2018, its Caledonian pinewoods had always witnessed centuries of history, from deadly clan skirmishes to the birth of the first Golden Retriever. Under the reign of Lady Islington in the 40s and 50s, however, Glen Affric was allowed to go to ruin.
In a sign of the lease of life that the Matthews and Middletons have brought to the estate, and its seat Affric Lodge, it may soon play home to the return of the beaver to Scotland. The species was driven to extinction in Scotland 400 years ago, but in December 2024, Forestry and Land Scotland applied for permission to release beavers on the land, as Richard Eden reported, after the Matthews’ estate joined three other private landowners to work on a rewilding project with the charity Trees for Life.

As the future lady of Glen Affric, Pippa Middleton may well follow in some truly illustrious footsteps. Her predecessors include Lady Fanny Spencer-Churchill, who hosted her nephew Winston Churchill at the Scottish Highlands estate, and Thelma Furness, Viscountess Furness, perhaps best known as the aunt of Gloria Vanderbilt and the mistress of King Edward VIII before his relationship with Wallis Simpson.
