Is Revenge of the Sith returning to theaters in 2025? Re-release explained
Ready to free Palpatine all over again? Revenge of the Sith turns 20, and there’s a huge Star Wars re-release in the pipeline.
It’s been 20 years since Anakin joined forces with Obi-Wan to set Palpatine free, but can Star Wars fans really relive the magic of Revenge of the Sith all over again with a re-release?
For most Star Wars fans (especially the younger ones), seeing the original episodes on the big screen would be nothing short of heaven. Consider how mixed the reactions to the franchise’s TV shows have been and this makes all the more sense.
While Andor Season 2 is still yet to come, programs like The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew have each missed the mark in different ways. Meanwhile, Star Wars is taking its upcoming movies in a completely different direction with Lando (that originally should have been a TV series) and Mandalorian & Grogu.
In 2025, however, it’s all about the movies of the past. Revenge of the Sith hits its two-decade anniversary in May, and you can relive Episode III on the big screen.
When is the Revenge of the Sith re-release?
Hooray! Disney/Lucasfilm is re-releasing Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in cinemas on April 25, 2025 for its 20th anniversary.

There’s even better news for fans in the US who don’t get travel sick – you’ll also be able to experience Episode III for the first time in 4DX. If you’ve not been before, this basically entails sitting in a chair that moves simultaneously with the action you’re seeing in the film, complete with special effects (not including your popcorn, which will go everywhere).

Dune 4 is reportedly in development with massive changes in store
As a press statement explains, “From the exhilarating battles over the planet of Coruscant to the fiery volcanic high grounds of Mustafar, relive this pivotal chapter in the Skywalker saga; the 4DX experience features high-tech motion chairs that sync with over 21 effects, all designed to complement the narrative of the film.”
If you can’t quite remember, Revenge of the Sith is set three years after the Clone Wars began. When Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker rescue Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous, Grievous escapes. The Jedi Council is suspicious of Chancellor Palpatine, who Anakin is close to. He’s asked to spy on the chancellor and becomes bitter toward the Council, embracing the Dark Side (see where this is going?).
How to get tickets
Annoyingly, tickets aren’t yet available to book, but when they are, they’ll most likely be available from AMC and Fandango.
Disney
We can expect these to go live around 3-4 weeks before April 25, so keep late March in your calendar for a likely ticket drop.
At the moment, we know screenings will be in select US theaters and international territories for one week only, with the screenings themselves covering “several formats.” You’ll need to check your local listings to find out if you’re covered by regular 2D and 4DX screenings.
It’s currently unclear if The Force Awakens will be following suit, which hits its 10-year anniversary in 2025. If it does, we’ll likely see a re-release in December.
