Last night at the 2025 Oscars, Isabella Rossellini channeled her iconic Blue Velvet character, Dorothy Vallens, in tribute to the late David Lynch, who directed the iconic film. “I decided to pay homage to David,” Rossellini tells InStyle. “He was my partner for many years, and we worked together on several films, including Blue Velvet, which remains one of my most successful.” A sapphire blue velvet Dolce and Gabbana was the perfect dress for the occasion. She accessorized it with Bulgari jewels and her mother Ingrid Bergman’s vintage earrings gifted by her father in 1954.
As a Lancôme ambassador, Rossellini’s makeup was equally stunning. “The focal point of the look was fluttery lashes and a berry color lip,” says her makeup artist Matin Maulawizada. After perfecting her complexion with Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation, he added a sheer wash of deep blue on her lids. He used Lash Idôle Flutter Extension Mascara to give her lashes length and volume. A swipe of Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in Mademoiselle Isabella finished the look.
“I first got obsessed with her in Blue Velvet and then saw her Lancôme campaigns for decades in billboards and magazines,” muses Maulawizada. “As a model, Isabella understands the value and role of makeup and always offers us her absolute presence and time at the makeup and hair chair. This paired with her magical voice and storytelling brings me so much joy to work with her.”
The legendary actress was also celebrating her first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sister Agnes in Conclave. “It’s an enormous honor,” Rossellini tells InStyle. “To be voted for by the best and included in a group of people who have demonstrated excellence, dedication, and immense talent makes me feel incredibly proud, accomplished, and deeply grateful.”
Below, Rossellini takes us further behind the scenes of her big night for the 2025 Oscars.
The night before the Oscars ceremony, I gathered with my family and a few friends, which was wonderful because the day before, you’re very nervous. What I did that day was have a small dinner with about 12 of my closest friends and family here in Los Angeles. My daughter asked, ‘How do you feel? What would you like to do?’ I said, ‘Well, I'm so nervous. I feel like a rabbit that wants to hide in a hole. And here, having dinner with you is the hole of the rabbit family in my den.’ That’s how I relaxed!

Red carpets are the most intimidating part of the awards for me because you’re not judged on the film or your skills as an actor, but on your looks, elegance, and how you present yourself. For us actors, who love to play other people—and I’m not shy when I play other people, I can do anything—it’s different when I have to present myself. Of course, I’m assaulted by all the insecurities that everyone has. Am I too short? Should I be thinner? Should I be younger? Should I have blue eyes? These are all insecurities that I think everyone feels.
For this red carpet, I decided to pay homage to David Lynch. David was my partner for many years, and we worked together on several films, including Blue Velvet, which I believe is one of my most successful films. Dolce & Gabbana made a beautiful dress for me, made of Blue Velvet. I wore Bulgari jewelry, but my earrings were from my mom. They were Bulgari earrings that my father gave her in 1954, when I was two years old. My mom is Ingrid Bergman, and she wore them when she won the Academy Award, so I wore them too—though I didn’t win.

When I played Blue Velvet, I had a specific look—very blue eyeshadow and very red lips. I was a nightclub singer in the film, and she was hiding behind her makeup because she was an abused woman, concealing her reality. I wanted the makeup to look like a doll’s, strong and almost like a mask. For this red carpet, with Lancôme, we did a Blue Velvet homage, but with much more subdued tones. There was a bit of blue eyeliner and eyeshadow, but not as strong as in Blue Velvet. For my lips, I used Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in Mademoiselle Isabella, which is my absolute favorite.
