House Republicans are moving to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) after he was forcibly removed from the House chamber Tuesday for repeatedly interrupting President Donald Trump’s address to Congress.

The censure resolution, introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), condemns Green’s conduct as a “breach of proper conduct” that disrupted the joint session. If passed, Green would be required to stand in the well of the House as the Speaker reads the censure resolution aloud.

Tensions boiled over during Trump’s speech when Green, a longtime opponent of the former and now current president, began shouting and pointing his cane at the podium.

“On March 4, 2025, during the joint session of Congress convened pursuant to House Concurrent Resolution 11, the President of the United States, speaking at the invitation of the House and Senate, had his remarks interrupted by the Representative from Texas, Mr. Green,” the censure read.

The night had already started on a tense note, with Democrats jeering as Trump took the stage while Republicans roared with a standing ovation. The president began by declaring that America is entering a new “golden age” and thanking voters for delivering what he called a “historic mandate” in the 2024 election.

But it was Trump’s statement that he won the popular vote—a feat no Republican has accomplished since George W. Bush in 2004—that sent Democrats into a frenzy. A mix of cheers and boos erupted from the left side of the aisle, only to be drowned out by Republicans chanting “USA, USA!”

Despite Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) warnings, Green continued to shout over the president, ultimately prompting the sergeant at arms to remove him from the chamber. As he was escorted out, Republicans broke into a chorus of “Na, na, na, na… goodbye,” echoing past moments when disruptive lawmakers faced consequences.

Green has been one of the most vocal members of the Democratic caucus in opposing Trump, routinely introducing impeachment articles since Trump’s first term. Just last month, on February 5, he once again filed new impeachment articles, calling Trump’s actions “dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”

His latest stunt, however, has drawn fresh rebukes from Republicans and even some calls from within his own party to maintain decorum.

In the aftermath of the incident, a CNN report released Wednesday revealed that 80% of viewers found Green’s behavior inappropriate. According to the report, a vast majority of Americans watching the speech disapproved of the Texas Democrat’s interruptions, while only 20% believed his actions were justified.

With Democrats continually finding themselves on the wrong side of public opinion, Green’s outburst may have done more harm than good to his party’s efforts to counter Trump’s message.

The censure resolution will now head to committee before a potential full House vote. If passed, Green will become the latest Democrat to face formal rebuke in a chamber that has grown increasingly polarized.

Green has represented Texas’s 9th Congressional District since 2005. Before serving in Congress, Green was a civil rights attorney and served as a justice of the peace in Texas.
