Jack Vettrianoâs Most Popular Paintings

The painter Jack Vettriano has died at the age of 73. He was found dead in his apartment in Nice over the weekend, and will be remembered as one of Scotlandâs most popular artists.
Born Jack Hoggan in Methil, Fife in 1951, he was a minerâs son who left school at 16 to become an apprentice mining engineer. He took up painting in the 1970s, working in an Impressionist style, but it was only in 1987 at the age of 36, after he left his wife, adopted his motherâs maiden name and began to emulate Guigan, that he began to develop his popular and self-taught style.
Working from his new Edinburgh base, he submitted two canvases for the Royal Scottish Academy annual show and in a life-changing moment, sold both on the first day of the exhibition in 1998. His 1992 painting The Singing Butler, has been called the best-selling image in Britain, due to its immense popularity as a print; the original sold for £744,500 in 2004.

His life was not without controversy. Critics have sniffed at his work for its commercial bent, and there have been criticisms of his erotic work for their male fantasy depictions of women. He said one of his inspirations was, â25 years of sexual misbehaviour.â
He struggled with drink and drug issues, and was convicted of drink-driving and possession of amphetamine in February 2012. Then in 2022 he told the Telegraph that he has two young Eastern European muses, who had helped him kick his addictions and allowed him to restart his stalled painting career.
In 2004 he was awarded an OBE and donated works to be sold at auction for charities including the Terrence Higgins Trust and Sport Relief.
The Singing Butler (1992)
This romantic image of a couple waltzing on a beach as a couple of windswept servants attend to them, including that singing butler, has been staggering popular and it is the best-selling art print in the UK.
It was based on a photo of Irish actress Orla Brady which featured in The Illustratorâs Figure Reference Manual.
