Jade Thirlwall reveals Harry Styles ghosted her when they were teenagers
Jade Thirlwall has revealed that she and Harry Styles once dated — before the boyband member ghosted her
Former Little Mix star and singer-songwriter Jade Thirlwall has revealed that she and Harry Styles once dated, making for the ultimate X Factor boyband-girlband crossover — if he hadn’t ghosted her.
Speaking playfully about the incident, which happened while Thirlwall and Styles were still in their teens, she told The Louis Theroux Podcast: “I think we went on like one date when we were like 16 or something.”
It was boy meets girl: Jade Thirlwall was a member of Little Mix, the X Factor-winning girlband who took the world by storm after they appeared on the cult talent show in 2011.
In turn, Styles was a member of One Direction, the boyband that prompted near-Beatlemania levels of hysteria when they competed on The X Factor in 2010.
It could have been the crossover to end all crossovers. Except Styles’s career blew up right around the time they went on a date.
The revelation was prompted by Theroux mentioning an old clip of Thirlwall from 2010 where she interacts with Harry Styles. “In fact there’s a clip on YouTube […] And Harry runs up and it's like, surprise, and then you look fairly blasé about it,” he said. “And the comments are like, love how Jade gives him the side eye or something, not side eye, but it's basically how you seemingly unimpressed you are.”

Thirlwall replies: “I didn't know he was going to be the Harry Styles, did I? I think we went on like one date when again, we were like 16 or something. Yeah, he’d just got put in the band.”
The singer-songwriter went on to explain how she and Styles “kept in touch” but then he dropped contact. “... Then the minute they went on live shows, he didn't message me back and I thought, ‘That's it now, he's gone, he's made it.’
However, Styles did at least apologise for ghosting Thirlwall. “And then I made it the next year, and then I saw him in the room after, and he was like, ‘I'm really sorry that I ignored you,’” she recalled. “I was so young, it didn't really matter. But he was always very, very lovely.”
Speaking on the podcast, Thirlwall also reflected on her relationship with her ex-Little Mix bandmate, Jesy Nelson, who left the band rather abruptly in December 2020 and cut off contact from her fellow bandmembers.

“I will never, begrudge Jesy wanting to leave, because if she needed to do that for herself, no matter what happened behind the scenes or, you know, anything that unfolded, I'll never discredit or invalidate the struggles that she had in the group, particularly at the beginning,” Thirlwall said.
“She really did suffer the most in terms of, like, trolling, the press being really mean, all of that stuff. And it really did some lasting damage. And we always tried our best to support her in that. Sometimes you get it wrong, sometimes you get it right. Like, again, like I said before, we're not qualified to, especially at 18 years old, to help someone with that.
“You just be a friend as much as you can. And I think towards the end, yeah, I think she gradually clocked out and that's fair enough. I feel like I can't and I don't want to talk about it in depth because it isn't just my story to tell. I'd be speaking for people and I don't think that's right. But for myself, I will say that I'm still getting over it now, quite truthfully.”
