Jake Gyllenhaal is teaming up with psychological horror director M Night Shyamalan for a new romantic thriller. Author Nicholas Sparks is also on board to write a novel in conjunction with Shyamalan’s script, making the film both an original story and an adaptation of sorts. The two will collaborate on an idea and work on their respective projects in conjunction with each other.
The producers will also be a mixture of the author and the director, with a combination of their frequent collaborators.Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajam will produce the picture through their production company, Blinding Edge Pictures, whileSparks will executive produce and bring along his usual producing partners, Theresa Park and Marc Bienstock.
Shyamalan has been a one-man franchise since his breakout hit The Sixth Sense in 1999. His most recent film, Trap, earned close to $83 million at the box office off of a $30 million budget, further proving his consistent bankability. His films have grossed a total of more than $3 billion.
Sparks is equally prolific. His romance novels have sold more than 130 million copies worldwide and have been adapted into nearly a dozen movies. Adaptations like The Notebook and Dear John have earned him name recognition among filmgoers outside his passionate readership.
Although his stories fit squarely into the romance genre, he has often blended them with history and thriller elements. His 2010 novel Safe Haven, for example, is also a fantasy and a thriller, in keeping with Shyamalan’s trademark themes. It was also adapted into a hit film.
Gyllenhaal recently appeared in the Amazon MGM remake of the 1989 classic Road House, taking over the role portrayed by Patrick Swayze. The company doesn’t release its streaming numbers, but said that it broke viewership records. The actor also starred in the Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
He is set to appear in the upcoming monster movie The Bride! directed by his sister, actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Guy Ritchie’s upcoming action thriller In the Grey.
