James Bond fans are convinced that the next 007 could be a woman after a surprising tribute at the 2025 Oscars left them speculating.
During Sunday nightâs ceremony, host Conan OâBrien teased a special segment honouring the iconic spy and longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who were announced as winners of the Academyâs Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award and given Oscar statuettes at the Governors Awards.
Introducing the tribute was Oscar winner Halle Berry, who said: âI had the great pleasure of working with Barbara and Michael on Die Another Day and let me tell you, they donât just produce Bond movies, they were the heart and soul of this franchise for decades.
âEvery generation does have their Bond. The world revolves, it evolves, and so does he. But that signature mix of danger, style and intrigue, well, now thatâs timeless.
âTonight, we pay tribute to Barbara and Michael and to our favourite spy.â

As she finished Thai rapper and singer Lisa arrived on the stage to sing Live And Let Die, by Wings, with Doja Cat performing Dame Shirley Basseyâs Diamonds Are Forever. Also performing was Escapism singer Raye who sang Adeleâs Skyfall.
Skyfall by Adele, Writingâs On The Wall by Sam Smith, and No Time To Die by Billie Eilish, are all Bond songs that have gone on to win Oscar awards.
The choice of performers and the female-led tribute immediately sparked online discussions, with many speculating that the franchise could be gearing up for a major shake-up.
The tribute left many viewers puzzled, as it came despite the lack of any updates on who will succeed Daniel Craig or when the next Bond film will hit screens.
On Reddit, fans quickly began speculating that the all-female performances could be a subtle hint that the franchise is gearing up to introduce a female 007.
One person claimed: âI have a sneaking suspicion theyâre about to announce female lead for a Bond movie. Something about the energy idk.â
âAre they announcing a female Bond?â another suggested.
While others sounded off that the tribute had âno pointâ unless the next Bond was announced.

âIt would have worked if the next Bond had been announced in the middle of the #Oscars,â one viewer shared on X, formerly Twitter.
A second echoed: âWhat was the point of the James Bond tribute? I honestly thought we were going to find out who the next James Bond was during that. What a load of rubbish #Oscars.â
The official Bond film franchise has been controlled by members of the Broccoli family, either single-handedly or in partnership with others, since the first 007 movie Dr No in 1962.
Amazon has gained creative control of the franchise after the long-standing producers of the 007 films stepped away as part of a new deal.
There has been increasing speculation about the future of the series, with no announcement of a new actor to play the famous spy since Daniel Craigâs final portrayal in 2021âs No Time To Die.
Oscars: Academy Awards - AnoraThe independent film tells the story of a sex worker who dances at a strip club and meets â and marries â the son of a Russian oligarch. It takes a human-centred approach to filmmaking, focusing on themes of identity, resilience and a complex journey towards self-discovery.
Accepting the win, director Baker said: âI want to thank the Academy for recognising a truly independent film.â
Earlier in the night, an emotional Zoe Saldana broke down in tears as she picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Perez, while Kieran Culkin was honoured as Best Supporting Actor.
