Boston added three players to its injury report Saturday, listing Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford as questionable for its matchup with the Atlanta Hawks at TD Garden.
Tatum strained his left (non-shooting) shoulder while driving to the basket during Friday night’s home win over the Orlando Magic. He remained in the game and finished with a game-high 30 points in 35 minutes as the Celtics cruised to a 121-95 victory.
Though injuries have been a persistent issue for Boston this season, Tatum has been one of its most durable players, appearing in 38 of the team’s first 41 games. Only Payton Pritchard (41) and Derrick White (39) have made more appearances.
Porzingis (return from injury management) and Horford (left big toe sprain) typically do not play both ends of back-to-backs, and both were active against Orlando. Porzingis hasn’t played back-to-back nights since last January, and the 38-year-old Horford has not done so since March 2022.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla wouldn’t say after Friday’s game whether he planned to play Porzingis or Horford against Atlanta, but Porzingis left the door open for himself.
“I believe so,” the big man told reporters when asked if there was a chance he could suit up Saturday night. “I believe so. But that’s a little bit out of my hands. I think (Saturday) we’ll know more information.”
After missing the first 17 games following offseason surgery and then dealing with a series of minor ankle/foot injuries, Porzingis has impressed of late. Over his last seven games entering Saturday, he averaged 19.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks while making 47.4% of his 3-point attempts.
If Porzingis and Horford both sit against the Hawks, Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta would be the next men up in Boston’s frontcourt rotation, with the seldom-used Xavier Tillman as another depth option.
The Celtics had their entire core rotation available for their last four games after missing at least one player in 35 of their first 37.
