The Coupang Play drama “Newtopia,” starring BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, premiered on February 7. This marks her second lead role following the JTBC drama “Snowdrop.”
“Newtopia” tells the story of Young-joo (Jisoo), a woman struggling with workplace stress and the looming breakup with her soldier boyfriend, Jae-yoon (Park Jung-min), as they navigate a zombie-infested Seoul in search of each other. While Jae-yoon endures the hardships of military life, he clings to his love for Young-joo as a source of strength.
Though the drama sets out to portray a touching journey of love amid catastrophe, an unexpected issue has taken center stage from the very first episodes: Jisoo’s acting.
Online communities have been buzzing with debates over her performance, with many viewers criticizing her vocal delivery and overall acting skills. Some claim that her pronunciation and tone resemble the comedic acting of Ji Ye-eun in Coupang Play’s “SNL Korea,” making it difficult to fully immerse in the drama.
Comments such as “I thought Ji Ye-eun was in a movie,” “Isn’t she just a lisping Ji Ye-eun?” “She only has the face of an actress,” and “Her pronunciation is too unclear” have been circulating, with viewers comparing her delivery to comedic performances rather than serious acting.

One netizen remarked, “It’s not just that she’s bad at acting, her vocal delivery is seriously flawed. That’s not something she can easily fix with effort, so she’ll likely stay this way.”
The controversy has even reignited past criticism from “Snowdrop,” where Jisoo was previously scrutinized for her unclear enunciation and awkward expressions. With “Newtopia” now under the spotlight, some viewers are questioning whether she has improved at all since her last drama.

Skepticism about Jisoo’s acting career itself is also growing. One commenter bluntly stated, “It’s no surprise that Jisoo can’t act. She doesn’t need to improve because her fandom alone makes it profitable. Instead of working on her acting, she’d be better off posting on Instagram and catering to her international fans.”

Concerns over Jisoo’s performance existed even before the drama’s release, particularly after early teaser clips highlighted issues with her vocal delivery.
However, director Yoon Sung-hyun had a different take. At the Newtopia press screening on February 3, he said, “There were no difficulties working with Jisoo. Since she hadn’t acted for a long time after Snowdrop, I initially wondered, ‘Will this be okay?’ But she dedicated four days a week to script readings and put in relentless effort. By the time filming started, she was fully prepared.” He also praised her, saying, “She tackled difficult action scenes with a smile, and I’m grateful for that.”
Despite the director’s support, the public remains critical of Jisoo’s acting. As “Newtopia” unfolds across its eight-episode run, whether she can overcome the backlash and prove her growth remains a key point of interest.
