Much like John Cena once was for WWE, Joe Hendry now finds himself as the face of TNA Wrestling, with the TNA World Championship strapped around his waist. WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard recently sat down with Hendry to discuss the inspiration he’s taken from Cena as well as his favorite moments from the WWE star’s career.
Recently, Hendry called out the 16-time world champion for a future title match as a part of the WWE-TNA partnership. Looking back on Cena’s history, Hendry recalled a time when he crossed over into another foreign territory, that being ECW. According to Hendry, this remains his personal favorite moment of Cena’s career.
“The moment that I’m going to pick is actually when John Cena ventured into ECW,” Hendry said. “I think a lot of people could have crumbled in that moment, but he took what could have been a negative and just owned that moment. That is one of my favorite matches. I’ve never seen anything like that.
“When John Cena faced Rob Van Dam in ECW [at One Night Stand] to me, that was a special moment in wrestling. To me, that was a moment where John Cena really showed his character. It’s funny, sometimes history repeats itself, maybe he might want to wander into another organization for a championship match,” the TNA World Champion said, hinting at a potential showdown with each other.
At ECW One Night Stand 2006, Cena, a WWE Raw star, defended his WWE Championship against ECW original Rob Van Dam in the main event. RVD later won the match and the respective title, courtesy of interference from Edge.
Aside from Cena’s success in the ring, Joe Hendry has also enjoyed seeing him be his genuine self —something scarcely seen in pro wrestling.
“I study wrestling intently and I try and find common threads amongst top talents in the business across all companies. To me, the common thread is that top talents are truly authentically themselves out there,” Hendy said. “To me, those moments that you described, the ones we talked about, those moments are when [Cena] was truly authentically himself, regardless of the audience reaction.
“It’s inspired me to power forward regardless of what the reaction is and for me to have the courage to go out there into the arena and just to give my very best and to just be Joe Henry. So the more that I’ve steered into just being me, the more my career has seemed to ascend.”
According to Hendry, another common theme in success is having fun, which he believes TNA Wrestling is currently doing. As such, morale in the TNA locker room is said to be at a “high.”
“We’ve got heavyweights on our management team as well doing great things behind-the-scenes. We’ve got an unbelievable roster,” Hendry said. “If you thought 2024 was special, what until you see 2025. We’re so excited.”
