Johannes Radebe appeared on ITV's Lorraine to talk about his recent meeting with royalty, role in Kinky Boots and newest update on his book Jojo: Finally Home. The Strictly star, known for his sass and humour on the dancefloor, opened up to the talk show hosts about his "dark upbringing" and the struggles he faced dealing with being "mercilessly bullied" for being "gay and different".
The South African ballroom dancer spoke to host Ranvir Singh to promote the 2025 UK and Ireland tour of musical Kinky boots. Radebe described the experience as something that was "needed" in his life and that he is now "living his best life", even telling his mother how he has "never been this happy". When met with Ranvir's "seriously?" Johannes responded: "I can't tell you [just how happy]".
The star chalked his current joy as potentially down to the musical's incorporation of all four aspects of performance: "singing, dancing, acting and spoken dialect". TV presenter Ranveer and Johannes proceeded to gush over the costumes of the show, Johannes saying: "Let's not even start talking about the glamour of it all!".
"I've always said Kinky boots is not about cross-dressing or making boots. What's beautiful is the close relationships between grown men and their fathers - their regrets, the disappointments, the expectations. I think what's beautiful about it is the universal appeal. There is so many issues the musical covers."
Johannes' character has supposedly been made to 're-energise the brand', the dancer dedicating two years to singing training for his role "to do it justice" and build his confidence. Ranvir repeated how Johannes had said he was "made for the role" and that it was "destiny in many ways" before segueing into Radebe's best selling memoir that delves into the difficulty he faced being bullied as a gay child in South Africa.
She continued to say she was "actually surprised" to read that, during the process of writing his book, Johannes "had to release some demons". She admitted: "You're the last person I thought to have any demons."

"So much has happened in my life that could have broke me," stated Johannes, "but it didn't." Johannes said he had believed his story belonged permanently in the dark and "should never be told" until his agent insisted that "people need to hear this". To write the memoir, Johannes had to go to therapy to confront all he went through. He told Lorraine viewers that it was lovely to know his story is making a difference in people's lives but understands that it's not about him.
Now being made into a film, Jojo: Finally Home is "signed, sealed and will be delivered" joked Johannes, who is currently working with producers and writers for the story based on his life. With the autobiography receiving a 4.45 stars on Goodreads from over 1000 readers, we can expect the film to be well received by Strictly fans. One review read: "He never comes across, to me, as a woe is me character. It just felt like he was having a conversation solely with me", another commenting: "I think I could have listened to this audio in one sitting but I wanted to savour it".
"Going to need a second book to document the series of strictly where Johannes finally wins that much-deserved glitter ball trophy," demanded a fan on the book review website. The most famous fan of Johannes on Strictly wold be the Queen, Camilla, who has admitted to loving the show and even received a dancing lesson from the man himself.
Jojo: Finally Home is on its way to our screens
Johannes' success surpasses the humble means of his family, a healing South Africa post apartheid and the penchant for barbies and feminine clothing through school. 'Home' becomes a place where Jojo is accepted for who he is - as we have seen on the Strictly floor and now on stage. On being asked how he was going to cast 'Jojo', Johannes said: "There are so many Jojos running around the townships [in South Africa]. I get to go home every time and work with them - it won't be hard at all".
