John Nettles on reason he turned down role in Bergerac reboot
With hit detective series Bergerac due to return to TV screens, John Nettles has revealed why he won't be making appearance in the reboot.
Bergerac is due to return to TV screens on 28 February, with the popular detective series having been revived. It's been over 30 years since the original BBC series aired.
John Nettles starred in Bergerac as Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac from 1981 until 1991 but the 81 year-old won't be appearing in the reboot however, admitting he feels he is "too old".
Sharing his reason for not wanting to take up a role in the new series, the Midsomer Murders star told the BBC: "I'm not going to do it because I can't do it - I'm too old and I'd just get in the way. But I mean it was very lovely to be reminded of that and it's a brave project."
John revealed that producers did contact him about the reboot of Bergerac and outlined what they were planning to do in a letter. He said they had "a lot of talent involved in the production" and described the new series as much "darker" and "serious" than the original.
He told The Telegraph: "We had great fun doing our Bergerac, but that was a different era. To bring the series up to date, they had to leave behind, to some extent, that idea of Jersey as an insular backwater; small, quaint, cute, all those things that made the show enjoyably lightweight and instead make it darker, more serious, which involves a much deeper look at the relationships between people."
John went on to add: "That has to happen because there's no point in just repeating something."
The new series follows Bergerac, played by Damien Molony, as he returns to work after the death of his wife to solve the murder of a wealthy Jersey resident.
The reboot will see one character-led murder mystery be the focus of all six episodes, whereas the original featured a new storyline in each episode.
The full synopsis reads: "When a member of one of Jersey's wealthiest families is murdered, Chief of Police Uma Dalal wants their best detective on the case.
"Bergerac returns to work to help him become the formidable detective he once was, whilst also trying to prove to his daughter Kim and mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford that his life is back on track.
"The Wakefields, led by patriarch and businessman Arthur, are keeping their cards close to their chests, whilst a man from Bergeracâs past resurfaces to make a shocking accusation. Is Bergerac up to the job?"
Bergerac premieres on U&Drama on Thursday, 27 February.
