Originally described by Rolling Stone magazine as having a "Gen Z Rainbow Brite aesthetic", Jojo Siwa has dominated pop culture since she first appeared on our screens as a child star on the American series Dance Moms back in 2015. The show followed a group of young dancers and their mothers as they navigated being part of Abby Lee Miller's often intense dance company.

Now rumoured to be entering the Celebrity Big Brother house, Jojo immediately stood out from the pack, as she had star power in the masses in her very small frame and a bow that even Minnie Mouse would envy, giving her the nickname 'Jojo with the bow bow'. In an interview with CBBC’s Newsround in 2017 she said she had been wearing a bow in her hair since pre-school.

She said the “Bows got bigger and better and sparklier, then I became Jojo with the bow bow. A bow is more than just a hair accessory, its a symbol of power, confidence, this isn’t a word but believing-ness, it’s a good thing." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.

How did Jojo rise to fame?

Joelle Joanie Siwa, or more commonly known as Jojo, first appeared as a contestant on the reality TV show Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition at nine-years- old, before claiming her spot on the popular series Dance Moms. Although, she first started performing at just two-years-old whilst still wearing a nappy, when she competed in her first solo dance competition to the song "Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now" from the musical Hairspray.

Jojo's foray into business and net worth

The 21-year-old from Nebraska not only made her mark on the dance world, but also the music industry and world of business too as she was included in Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020. Her net worth sky rocketed due to numerous business ventures, and at just 21 she is said to be worth $20 million which is roughly over £15.5 million.

She became a household name in the past, especially after joining the Nickelodeon family in 2017 and signing an 'overall talent deal' with the network. She later moved on to creating music including her catchy song Boomerang with has racked up over 1 billion views on YouTube.

Jojo profited off her trademark bows and collaborated with Claire's accessories to make a hair accessory line in 2016. She revealed that over 40 million bows had been sold in 2018 alone, with fans being able to choose from 7,000 different bows and the prices ranging from $5 to $16 per bow, I think you can do the maths there.

Jojo's coming out and relationship status

As the dancer got older she decided to stray away from her iconic look and decided to ditch the bows that build her brand. In an interview with People magazine she said: "I just had my 18th birthday and it was right around my birthday that I realized, 'I kinda wanna do my hair different today. It just felt like the right time and to do something different and to do something maybe a little bit more mature or a little upgrade."

This coincided with around the time Jojo had came out as being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. She described the decision to leave her bows behind as harder than coming out. Jojo's mother, Jessalynn, asked her if it was "harder to come out to me or tell me that you wanna wear your hair different?", to which the TV personality replied, "It surprisingly was harder to tell you that I wanted to wear my hair different."

She added that despite her new mature look, the bows would still be part of her life. She added:"I still love bows, I forever will. They're who I am, but maybe I won't wear it every day."

During the debut episode of her podcast Jojo Siwa Now, she discussed her coming out story and how she wanted to tell her fans that she identified as queer. “I was on the phone with my girlfriend at the time, and I said ‘I think I wanna come out to the world. I posted this picture and threw it on my Instagram Story, and that’s how I confirmed it … I didn’t think twice about it.”

Her coming out received a mixed reaction, as plenty of people were not happy with the news. She explained: "There was also a lot of negativity, and I did lose a lot. I didn’t care, and I still don’t care about the things I lost and the people that I lost and if I lost a chunk of fans, because it’s who I am.”

She added: "If you didn’t like me because [one day] I was straight, and [the next day] I was gay, then you’re not meant to like me anyways. I just try to really be genuine, really be who I am."

Although the singer didn't want to necessarily label herself, as she wasn't too sure what best defined her. She said to People magazine: " I don't know, bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool."

She added: "Technically I would say that I am pansexual because that's how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human."

Despite knowing since she was young, she knew it was a risk to come out due to the magnitude of her global brand. She said: "I have a lot that could have gone away because of my love life.

"My thing is, I don't want people to watch my videos or buy my merchandise if they aren't going to support not only me, but the LGBTQ community. I've never gotten this much support from the world. I think this is the first time that I've felt so personally happy."

After coming out, Jojo decided to change not only her image but her musical genre too as she transitioned to what she called "Gay pop", which caused all sorts of controversy as she claimed to have invented the genre. She released her hit single Karma, with an extremely raunchy music video which saw her getting rather close to another female dancer.

In the 2021 series of Dancing with the Stars (the American equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing), Jojo became the runner-up as part of the first same-sex dancing partnership in the show's history whilst performing with dance partner, Jenna Johnson.

She is now happily in a public relationship with Australian influencer Kath Ebbs. They hard launched their relationship in a number of loved-up social media posts.

On March 19, her girlfriend shared a post saying: "To one of the kindest, most courageous, resilience & hilarious people I have ever met! What a blessing to share a little piece of life with you. Thank you for reminding me to laugh always."
