Jon Stewart commits act of self-harm while blasting Elon Musk's DOGE
The comedian was more passionate than usual, tearing into Elon Musk's DOGE and President Joe Biden's reforms he said didn't go far enough. The dramatic scene led to him injuring himself.
During Monday's episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart smashed his hand into his coffee mug, accidentally cutting himself after unloading a fiery rant on Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.
Stewart expressed his outrage at DOGE's slash and burn downsizing of jobs within the federal government.Â
'Cutting money shouldnât be this hard. Iâm starting to think that we as a country donât understand where the real waste, fraud and abuse in our system really is,' Stewart began.
DOGE says it has saved the most money by reducing spending and headcounts at the Department of Education and the General Services Administration, an agency that manages and supports other federal departments.
Steep cuts have also been made at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which provided food and disease management aid to foreign countries around the world before it was dismantled by Musk and President Donald Trump.
DOGE says it has saved $65 billion so far, but Stewart identified things to cut that he said could save the US even more money, including subsidies to already-profitable oil and gas companies and the carried interest loophole that lowers the tax burden for hedge fund managers.
'How about we stop the $2 trillion weâve given to defense contractors to build a fighter jet that blows â but everybody knows the next war is gonna be fought with drones and blockchain, whatever that is,' Stewart said, referencing the US military's troubled F-35 jet program. 'I canât believe it â I just saved us billions of dollars in 11 seconds.'
Unexpectedly, it was President Joe Biden's effort to reduce the price of 10 drugs for people on Medicare that finally caused Stewart to lose it and destroy his mug.
Jon Stewart is pictured smashing his mug during Monday's edition of the Daily Show. His breaking point was finally reached when he began talking about persistently high drug prices in the United States
'Iâll be going to the hospital soon,' he said with a chuckle before moving his injured palm beneath his desk
Preceding his rant about drug prices, Stewart railed against Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency for not going after what he believes is the true waste, fraud and abuse
'Pharmaceutical companies get everything from our government â tax breaks, research grants, patent extensions â worth billions of dollars. And what do we, the people, get for it? The highest drug prices in the Western hemisphere,' he said.
'But you know whatâs so horrible about our system now, and the corruption thatâs laid within it? Weâre so numb to it that we actually tout tiny cracks in that exploitation as victory,' he added.
Biden cutting the price of drugs for blood clots, diabetes, blood cancers, Crohn's disease and more, is what Stewart defined as the 'tiny cracks' in the overall healthcare system.
'Can it be? The companies we subsidize with billions of dollars are allowing us the privilege to negotiate the price of 10 of their drugs?' Stewart said.
'It would be embarrassing if it was a small drop in the bucket, and that the American people didnât expect that we should negotiate for all their f***ing drugs, because weâve already paid for it with our subsidies!' he shouted as he brought his hand down on the mug, shattering it.
'Come on!' he yelled before glancing at his hand and realizing he had cut himself.
'Iâll be going to the hospital soon,' he said with a chuckle before moving his injured palm beneath his desk.
Stewart kept his hand out of view for the rest of the segment, only lifting it once, exposing the audience to the bloody sight. When they gasped, he assured them, 'It's fine!'
