TV presenter Josie Gibson has revealed she was once asked to leave Sir Elton John’s annual Academy Awards viewing party in Los Angeles.
Chatting on This Morning in the run up to this year’s Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, Josie told co-presenter Alison Hammond that she was kicked out of Elton’s famed AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party after it was revealed that Bank of Dave’s Dave Fishwick would be reporting on the awards for the show next week. Josie said: “Well when I went [to the Oscars], I was kicked out of Elton John’s party.”
Later in the show she revealed what had happened, though she didn’t specify which year she tried to attend. She told Alison: “I messed with my wristband and they couldn’t read it, so I was asked to leave,” referring to the security bracelet that would need to be scanned to gain access to the party.

Elton’s VIP bash is one of the annual parties held on Oscar night. The first party took place at the Maple Drive Restaurant in 1993 and raised $300,000 for his charity, while in recent years the party has been held at the large Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles and, since 2014 at West Hollywood Park.
Each year the event is packed with celebrity guests, including Sir Elton himself, alongside names such as Miley Cyrus, Joan Collins, Ed Sheeran, Victoria Beckham, Donatella Versace and Sharon Osbourne, and donations have risen to around $8 million a year. This year, the party is once again being held in West Hollywood Park and is being hosted by Elton John, David Furnish, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jean Smart, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka.
Chappell Roan will be performing and she said: “I’m absolutely glowing as I write this!! I’m so honored to announce that I’ll be performing at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Academy Awards! Elton and his husband, David, have been incredible guiding lights for me this year, showing me a love that has truly helped me through. I’m deeply passionate about supporting the queer community in every way I can, and I’m so proud to be part of an organization that fights for equality and provides lifesaving access to care for queer communities. I can’t wait to bring an unabashedly ☆gay☆ performance to such an iconic night!”
The 97th Academy Awards are taking place on Sunday 2 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The awards will be hosted by talk show star and comedian Conan O’Brien and British nominees include Ralph Fiennes for the movie Conclave, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, the crew of Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which is nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, and Elton John himself, who is nominated for his Original Song ‘Never Too Late.’
