Kanye West revealed his ex-wife Kim Kardashian told the rapper to see a doctor after insisting he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder.
The 47-year-old controversial rapper worried fans in 2020 when it was reported that he was 'in the middle of a serious bipolar episode' which concerned his friends and family. Kim, amidst rumours of their divorce, came to his defence as she called him a 'brilliant' yet 'complicated' man.
"He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressures of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the personal loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is highlighted by his bipolar disorder," she said at the time. Kanye first revealed he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018 after many years of unpredictable behaviour and a public breakdown.
Kanye confirmed in an interview then that he had been "diagnosed with a mental condition", adding: "I've never been diagnosed and I was like 39 years old. I'm so blessed and so privileged because think about people that have mental issues that are not Kanye West, that can't go and make that [album] and make you feel like it's all good."
The rapper has referred to his diagnosis in his albums but recently revealed it was actually a misdiagnosis as he confessed to actually having autism. Speaking on Justin Laboy's podcast The Download, Kanye said: "The constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control."

He added: "They call it specifically bipolar, they put that on me they I said it so I put it on the album. I went to this doctor, one that works with Justin Bieber, one that work with I'm not even going to name other names and stuff." He didn't outright name his ex-wife but referred to the time he was struggling with his mental health.
Kanye continued: "My wife took me to do that because she said: 'Something about your personality doesn't feel like it's bipolar. I've seen bipolar before,' She's educated so she said 'I've seen bipolar before'." He went on to reference Rain Man and added: "I've come to find out it's really a case of autism that I have and autism takes you to a Rainman thing where you're like 'Oh man I'm going wear this Trump hat because I like Trump in general and then when people tell you to not do it you just get on that one point.
"And that's my problem, when fans tell me to do my album in a certain way I'll do it the opposite way just because I got my money right!" Kanye said the people around him found it difficult as "this is like a grown man, you can't tell him". He went on to say: "You can't take control of his his bank account, you can't control what I'm saying on Twitter but a lot of what was sending me into the episodes and it's hard.
"My dad and a bunch of people said 'You can't leave Adidas. Why would you leave all that money?' But the constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control." During the same podcast, Kanye revealed he stopped taking his medication after discovering he's autistic and not bipolar.
The star explained: "I haven't taken the medication since I found out that it wasn't bipolar and that it wasn't the right diagnosis and I found out it was autism. It's finding stuff that doesn't block the creativity obviously that's what I bring to the world you know it's world."
