Kate Middleton made a very special surprise engagement.

The Princess of Wales marked her first royal outing of the year with a visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she received cancer treatment last year.

“The princess wanted to make the journey to both show her gratitude to the incredible team,” Kensington Palace said in a statement to The Independent Jan. 14. “But also highlight the world leading care and treatment the Marsden provides.”

Kate, donning a burgundy dress, sat with patients and had a discussion with a group of medical staff. Making the visit even sweeter, the royal even took the time to greet the on-site service dog.

Kate’s solo visit came with the announcement that she will join her husband, Prince William as a patron for the medical center, as an advocate for cancer research, treatments, and care for patients.
