Kate Middleton: âfocus on the work, not the wardrobeâ as the Princess of Wales breaks from tradition upon return to public duties
â??The style is there but itâ??s about the substance,â?? a source explained after news that Kensington Palace will no longer release information about the Princess of Wales' wardrobe choices
Kate Middleton has signalled for reduced focus on her wardrobe as she returns to public-facing duties, â here, the Princess Of Wales is seen during the opening of Evelina London's new children's day surgery unit on 5 December, 2023
WPA Pool/Getty ImagesKate Middleton has long been heralded a style icon for her impeccable taste in British brands. From Alexander McQueen to Catherine Walker and Jenny Packham, the Princess of Wales is said to wield a billion-pound influence over the fashion industry. Be it royal watchers or British Vogue covers, Catherineâs sartorial choices (often subtly symbolic) garner the attention of editors, bloggers, photographers, and fans all across the globe. But now, the Princess of Wales seems to be saying goodbye to all that.
In a break from a decade of tradition, Kensington Palace will no longer release details of Catherineâs outfits during her royal engagements, a move that perhaps signals the Princessâs desire for attention to shift away from her wardrobe and on to the causes she serves.
Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales welcome the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and his wife Sheikha Jawaher at Buckingham palace on day one of the Qatari state visit to the United Kingdom on 3 December, 2024 â at the time, it was noted how the Princess donned the colours of the Qatari flag
WPA Pool/Getty ImagesA source from the palace explained the decision: âThere is an absolute feeling that it [the public-facing work] is not about what the princess is wearing,â they told The Times.
âShe wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting. There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but itâs about the substance.â
This significant change of tact is another sign of Catherineâs new approach to royal duties in the wake of her cancer diagnosis. Royal insiders have advised that the Princess is âa different personâ since stepping back from public life in March 2024 to undergo chemotherapy treatment.
âLife-threatening illnesses bring a reconsideration of priorities. She and William have always made it clear that family is the most important thing,â a source close to the royals told People. âYou canât go through something like that and come out the other side unchanged. She is a different person now.â That means, sources have said, an increased focus on family life with Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Princess Louis.
Since announcing the news that her chemotherapy treatment has come to an end in September, the Princess of Wales has made a series of personal public engagements, including one to The Royal Marsden Hospital on 14 January, 2025
Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesWe have also seen a priority for highly personal engagements as Catherine makes her slow return to public-facing duties since her announcement that the treatment had concluded in September 2024. A moving visit to bereaved families in Southport, an emotional return to the Royal Marsden Hospital (where the Princess revealed that she had attended her chemotherapy appointments), and last weekâs âaway dayâ to a childrenâs hospice in South Wales â this shift in priority towards more poignant causes could have left Catherine wanting to direct attention away from her wardrobe and towards the charities she spotlights. It is thought, however, that the most significant outfits will be continue to listed by Kensington Palace.
In 2022, a close friend of Catherineâs told The Sunday Times that the immediate media buzz around her outfits was âenormously frustrating and difficultâ for the future queen.
âWhen she goes to the Bond premiere or is at Trooping the Colour, of course she puts on the âuniformâ of the role,â they explained. âBut what was enormously frustrating and difficult for her, especially in the early days, was she was going out and doing the work she was interested in and was hugely important to her, and people just talked about what she was wearing.â
One of Catherine's most iconic looks? Then Duchess of Cambridge, she joined Prince William for the world premier of No Time To Die World at the Royal Albert Hall on 28 September, 2021, wearing Jenny Packham
Karwai TangOf course, a nod from the Princess of Wales can be career-changing for British designers. Ever since Kate Middleton married into the royal family in 2011, her fashion choices have wielded unparalleled impact on the publicâs shopping habits. Dubbed âThe Kate Effectâ, any outfit that the Princess of Wales wears almost immediately sells out.
When it comes to jewellery, one designer who knows all too well how valuable a seal of approval from Kate Middleton can be is Catherine Zoraida. The Princess of Wales has turned to Zoraidaâs work countless times, including her poignant visit to Southport last October, where she met with bereaved families in the wake of the tragic knife attacks that July.
âItâs something like a 500 per cent lift in sales whenever she is seen in a pair of earrings,â the designer said in MailOnline. âTheyâre not just one-hit wonders, either. She looks after them well and whenever she re-wears them there is another uplift.â
Designer Catherine Zoraida said her work sees a â500 per centâ uplift in sales when worn by the Princess of Wales, who donned Zoraida's earrings on a trip to Southport last year
WPA Pool/Getty ImagesEven some of the biggest names in global fashion benefit from âThe Kate Effectâ. Jimmy Choo, Whistles, and Zara are all known to see sales skyrocket after an outing from the Princess of Wales. David Reiss, founder of Reiss, told Marie Claire that their website crashed following a surge of interest in one of Kateâs dresses as early as 2011.
And with the news that Catherine is set to become the first Princess of Wales to issue royal warrants since Mary of Teck, itâs difficult to imagine the interest in her wardrobe will fizzle out any time soon.
But who might be so lucky? Over the years, the Princess of Wales has built up a portfolio of preferred brands â especially when it comes to fashion. Many will expect Alexander McQueen, considered Catherineâs âgo-to fashion houseâ, to soon bear her coat of arms. From her Victorian-inspired lace wedding gown designed by creative director Sarah Burton, to the red double-breasted coat that she wore for her milestone return to the Together At Christmas carol concert last December, the Princess of Wales turns to the legendary designer for her most personal of engagements.
Other favourites looking to receive a nod might include Catherine Walker (who designed the dignified military-inspired coat that the Princess of Wales chose for Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph and for the funeral of Prince Philip in 2021), Jenny Packham (responsible for some of Catherineâs most regal outfits, including that golden gown from the No Time To Die premier in 2021, the black and white dress she picked for her return to the public eye at Trooping The Colour 2024, and countless designs at state visits and diplomatic dinners), and Strathberry (a handbag designer she seems to have on speed dial). Holland Cooper and Emmy London are surely in the ring, too.

CHRIS JACKSON/Getty ImagesCould Barbour get a nod, an iconic favourite of the famously outdoorsy Princess of Wales? Donât count out Brora. The luxury cashmere producers, whose Scottish knitwear is hand-produced using 200-year-old mills, is likely to be high up the list, especially considering King Charlesâ recent stipulation that royal warrant-bearing brands must evidence a sustainability policy.
When it comes to combining style and social consciousness, Beulah London will certainly be in consideration. Founded by Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs (a close friend of Catherine's, and the daughter of the 4th Marquess of Reading) and Lavinia Richards, the fashion house is not only beloved by the Princess of Wales (an early adopter since joining the royal family in 2011), but also Lady Gabriella Windsor and Tamara Beckwith Veroni.
âThe Beulah woman is sophisticated, glamorous, and has a conscience,â Rufus Isaacs explained to Tatler, âShe needs dresses which can be thrown on to make her look instantly glam, and she also cares about how and where her clothes have been made.â
So, too, do millions worldwide. No doubt this shift in perspective from the Princess of Wales will leave countless fashion-forward royal watchers awaiting the royal warrant news with even more eager anticipation.
