Kate Middleton’s Chemotherapy Treatments Were ‘Pretty Lonely’
Princess Kate Middleton completed her chemotherapy treatments with a fair amount of privacy and a royal insider said it ‘must have been pretty lonely.’
Princess Kate Middleton completed her preventative chemotherapy treatments in 2024, but a royal insider revealed that it wasn’t something she was able to endure with public support from friends and family due to her fame.
“Going through the back door unseen while going through the treatment must have been pretty lonely,” the insider told People in an article published on Thursday, January 23. “When you see these other people when they’re having their chemotherapy, they were doing it as a group, with a support mechanism.”
Kate, 43, had visited the hospital earlier this month and talked about her cancer treatments.
“I had to do it privately and quietly, but being on a ward like this has to be reassuring in a way,” she told another patient while there, per People.
In January 2024, Buckingham Palace officials announced that Kate had been admitted to the hospital to undergo a planned abdominal surgery. However, months went by after the announcement and Kate wasn’t seen in public. This caused rumors about Kate’s condition to run rampant, and conspiracy theories about what was happening behind the scenes flooded the internet.
On March 22, 2024, the princess shared a video message with the world and confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer.
“My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in early stages of that treatment,” Kate explained. “It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to [the kids] in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.”
She continued, “I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body and spirits. We hope that you’ll understand that as a family we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able. But for now, I must focus on making a full recovery.”

Chris Jackson / Getty ImagesFor the next few months, Kate stepped back from her royal duties and focused on her cancer treatments in private. She made very few appearances over the summer months, but managed to attend some larger events like Trooping the Colour and Wimbledon. In September 2024, six months after she announced her diagnosis, Kate revealed she had completed her chemotherapy treatments.
“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” Kate said in another video message. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”
After the holidays, Kate announced that she was officially in remission. The mom of three shared the news via X on January 14.
“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything,” Kate wrote in a statement. “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
