Keanu Reeves Warned Halle Berry About Doing ‘John Wick Chapter 3’

Halle Berry learned how tough she could really be while preparing to play the assassin Sofia in ‘John Wick Chapter 3’.

Keanu Reeves may have earned way less than expected in the original John Wick, but it quickly became one of the actor’s many blockbuster franchises. So much so that actors like Halle Berry wanted in on the action. But playing an assassin in the flick herself meant Berry had to undergo a training regimen unlike anything she’d ever experienced.

She had a particularly hard time training for Catwoman, which pushed her to her physical limits. But given her statements for John Wick Chapter 3, the training she did for the action blockbuster might’ve pushed her even further. To the point where Berry sustained deep injuries in the process.
“I had learned capoeira for Catwoman and I had done some training for X-Men and Bond,” Berry said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “This was on another level. I trained for about six months, five days a week. It was gun training, jiu-jitsu, aikido, all different kinds of martial arts. I broke three ribs at one point. When I broke the ribs I thought, Oh, this is it, they’re going to recast me, but Chad said he was going to wait for me. And he waited for me, and I went back into training, and kept going.”
As for how Berry broke her ribs, she confided that she wasn’t too sure.
“We don’t know, just somehow in one of the training sessions, we’re not even really clear when I did it,” she said. “I broke it, and I kept working for about five months, until I just couldn’t do it anymore and had to stop.”
However, Reeves warned her about the training she’d endure beforehand. He was already well-versed in his workouts for John Wick by the time the third film came around. His believable fights in the franchise even had some questioning if Reeves really did know martial arts. But as brutal as his John Wick training could be, he reminded Berry that the results were worth it.
“Keanu told me, when I first started, ‘You’re going to work harder than you’ve ever worked, but it’s going to be the most rewarding at the end of the day, I promise you,’” she said. “And he was absolutely right.”
Berry became a part of John Wick’s rich and expansive mythology when she played the assassin Sofia in John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum. Berry became an instant fan of Reeves’ tortured killer and the world he inhabited after watching the first John Wick. Her fascination with the film’s story only increased when she watched its sequel. But by then, Berry started to wonder why she wasn’t a part of the franchise.
“John Wick One, I watched it when he came out. I saw in the cinema and I loved it the first time I saw it. I love the world,” Reeves once said in an interview with Screen Rant. “I loved when I saw Keanu doing everything he did. And I mean he’s gone 300 times further now. But the first movie I was just blown away and I thought, wow, we have all this access to CG and we’re seeing all these superhero movies. But here it was just a guy who was doing this for real. And I got really lit up by that. And then so the second one I got more lit up and when I heard they were making a third one, I was like, okay, wait a goddamn minute. Somebody is putting me in this movie. There’s no way I’m not going to be in this movie. So luckily Chad let me do that.”
But with the John Wick franchise not ending with Chapter 3, the Bruised star felt there was a possibility for Sofia to get her own movie. It helped that the John Wick universe was already going to expand with the spin-off Ballerina, which will star Ana de Armas in the lead role. Chapter 3 touched on Sofia’s backstory, which Berry thought would’ve been further explored down the line. Although it wasn’t, Berry still felt a spin-off movie might’ve been possible.
“I thought that would’ve been a cool storyline. We talked about it, that’s for sure. We seeded it in John Wick: Chapter 3, and we’ve talked about a spinoff with Lionsgate that could potentially happen. We need to do it sooner than later, but that could potentially happen. And I love that universe. I love John Wick and I loved that character, so you never know. We’ll see,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
