Keith Urban Credits “Era of Fake News” For Spurring Country Music Renaissance
Superstar touts strong storytelling at heart of genre for providing what "audiences are craving" in years following pandemic
Timing is everything, and as far as Keith Urban is concerned, the timing was perfect in fueling what many believe to be a cultural renaissance in country music.
“In an era of fake news, authentic storytelling becomes even more essential,” the former American Idol judge said in a February 3 interview with Inked. “Country is resonating with a much larger audience because it has a lot to say, and honestly, other genres may have less to say lately. It’s no surprise people are more than ready for it.”
Urban also suggested that the global COVID-19 pandemic may have catapulted a movement that has seen artists such as Beyonce and Post Malone make the leap into the country music world.
“Country’s always had strong storytelling at its heart,” the four-time Grammy Award winner said to Inked. “But it’s also about having a drink, a dance, and a damn good time. Audiences are craving that right now. Isolation made people want something that felt real; something with depth. Country was there, waiting.”

Keith Urban released his 11th studio album, “High,” on September 20, 2024.
Urban has been doing his part to help people have a good time. On September 20, 2024, he released his 11th studio album, “High,” and in an Instagram post that same day, Urban expressed his hope that the joy he felt putting together this new collection of songs would resonate with his audience.”
“Out of all of the things that have changed in my life, one has been a constant. I love making music,” Urban stated. “The feeling of writing a song that has real magic in it, bringing that song to life in the studio, and then playing it on stage and watching complete strangers sing every word. It’s like walking on the moon (not that I’ve done that YET, but an astronaut hasn’t stood on stage and shredded either so….) My desire is for the ‘flow state,’ and that’s what happened when we started this album ‘HIGH.’ It just FLOWED and I feel the spirit of the whole album really reflects that. I hope you feel that too.”

Keith Urban is scheduled to play the last five dates of a residency in Las Vegas beginning February 14.
The good times seem certain to continue for Urban and his fans. In early December, Urban announced the High and Alive World Tour, which is scheduled to open May 22 in Orange Beach, Alabama. In a statement published by Billboard, Urban spoke about the thrill he gets from sharing a musical experience with the crowd.
“Playing live is what I live to do,” he said in the statement. “Looking out from a stage and seeing people singing, forgetting about all the stress in their lives, cutting loose, and feeling ALIVE – that’s what it’s about for me. Lots of hits, new songs, things we won’t even think about until we’re onstage – and loads of guitar. We’re gonna make this tour the best night of your life!”
Additionally, Urban will soon play the second half of a residency at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. After a quintet of shows in October, Urban will return to the BleauLive Theater for five more nights in February, beginning on Valentine’s Day.
“I love being in Vegas. I love the energy; I love the whole thing,” Urban said in a September 19 interview with Vegas Magazine. “I send my car out there because I love driving; it’s one of my passions. One of my favorite things to do when I finish the show is to get in my car and drive to where I’m staying. Coming off a rowdy, intense stage and getting in the car on my own, sweaty in stage clothes and doing a leisurely drive home with the windows down, just listening to the sounds of Vegas—it is just heaven.”
