Kendrick Lamar and Timothée Chalamet Dig Into the Creative Process in New Interview

The rapper and actor chat about embracing failure and honing their craft in a chat ahead of Lamar's Super Bowl halftime performance
Grammy champ Kendrick Lamar and Oscar hopeful Timothée Chalamet discussed their respective crafts in a new short conversation ahead of Lamar’s performance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show.
The NFL shared the three-and-a-half-minute video, which found Lamar and Chalamet driving around in a Buick GNX (the car that gave Lamar’s latest album its name). The chat opened with Lamar talking about his writing practice, getting back into the flow after a long break, and the importance of “keeping the pen moving” even when you’re stuck.
Chalamet said preparing for a role or scene poses similar challenges, on top of an even more existential one he’s experienced as an actor: “The thing about acting is, if you don’t have an audience, it’s just a form of insanity,” he said. “I definitely try to warm up and lose that self-consciousness when you finally get back out there. But that takes time. I always try to embrace failure.”
Jumping off that, Lamar said, “I think that’s probably one of the biggest misconceptions about me as an artist. I’m always locked in, I’m always trying new things — whether or not I like ‘em is a whole other conversation. But I have to keep the pen moving. It’s my form of sanity. And it’s also given me the opportunity to learn myself, find out who I am… Because when you’re writing, you gotta sit and go through the emotions and be vulnerable about it whether it’s a fun song or sad, or got some type of depth or not.”
Lamar is heading into the Super Bowl after a massive night at the Grammys last week, where he won five awards for his scathing Drake diss “Not Like Us,” including Song and Record of the Year. At a recent press conference about his halftime show — which will feature an appearance from SZA — Lamar said fans can expect the kind of “storytelling” he’s always brought to his music. “I like to always carry on that sense of mak[ing] people listen, but also [to] see and think a little,” he said.
As for Chalamet, he’s been on a press tour for the ages for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, including a Rolling Stone cover story and a recent stint as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. A Complete Unknown earned Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet, as well as acting nods for co-stars Monica Barbaro and Edward Norton.
