Kensington Palace issues unprecedented statement in defence of Kate Middleton
Kate Middleton makes headlines whenever she steps out in public - and now Kensington Palace has issued a surprising statement regarding the sharing of information about Kate
Kensington Palace has broken its silence following the fallout over the reporting on Kate Middleton's outfits rather than her charity work. Earlier this month, the Times reported that the Palace would no longer be releasing details about Kate's wardrobe when she attends royal engagements because the Princess wants the focus to remain on her causes rather than her fashion.
The report stated she found it "frustrating and difficult" when the spotlight is instead on what she looks like. Ever since Kate became a member of the British royal family following her marriage to Prince William in April 2011, Kensington Palace has routinely released details of the clothes she wears on public engagements.
But a royal insider told the publication: "There is an absolute feeling that it [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing. She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting. There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but itâs about the substance."
The report saddened royalists, with one royal expert even saying that his heart 'sank' when he heard the news. But in a new statement, a Kensington Palace spokesperson has confirmed that there has been no policy change, despite the recent reports suggesting otherwise.
According to the Express, a spokesperson said: "Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales's clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits. To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales. The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales."
It continued: "To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness's clothing."
It comes after a close friend of the Princess told the Sunday Times in 2022: "When she goes to the Bond premiere or is at Trooping the Colour, of course she puts on the 'uniform' of the role. But what was enormously frustrating and difficult for her, especially in the early days, was she was going out and doing the work she was interested in and was hugely important to her, and people just talked about what she was wearing."
Kate is considered a global style icon and the pieces she wears routinely sell out in record time. Whether wearing recycled outfits, High Street items or beautiful gowns, her looks have a huge impact on sales, with her endorsement recently estimated to be worth ÂŁ1bn annually to the fashion industry, according to Newsweek.
And the Princess has undergone a significant shift in recent years. When she first started out in royal life, Kate relied heavily on floral dresses that were fitted and flared, but she now has a new fashion formula, and it's boosted her style credentials even further.
The mum-of-three's go-to outfit now typically consists of a beautiful tailored trouser suit, a T-shirt or blouse and pointed court shoes. It's seen as an ideal choice for a modern-day Princess; polished and formal but also relaxed and understated with the addition of a more casual top.
According to a number of experts, the change in Kate's style sends a clear message. "I think it marks a new era in her royal life," Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Daily Telegraph told PEOPLE magazine. "It shows her confidence is growing and that sheâs willing to take more risks and do something that might not have come naturally to her."
Bethan continued: "She's transforming before our eyes. She might not be able to say to us, 'Look, my life is now completely different, me and my husband are one step closer to the biggest job of his life,' but she is saying that through her fashion choices."
