He had just submitted highly-ranked lightweight Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 before dropping a bombshell retirement announcement, during which he cited his father's passing as the main driving force behind the decision.
Since retiring from MMA, Nurmagomedov has transitioned into a full-time coach and mentor to his fellow Dagestani fighters.
Many UFC fans could've predicted that endeavour for the MMA icon, but very few would've had a Nurmagomedov and David Beckham crossover on their 2025 bingo card.
"At the end of 2018, I flew to Paris," Nurmagomedov said during an interview with Gorilla Energy.

"David Beckham was there and started talking about how he and his son were watching my fights."
Nurmagomedov then hilariously recalled the one request the former England captain had for him.
"He asked me if I could record a video of me saying: 'I will smash your face if you don't obey your father."
MMA fans were quick with their responses to Nurmagomedov's wild story.

A third said: "David Beckham is a bigger global star than anyone from the NBA or NFL right now, this link up just shows how big Khabib is."
This January is one of the busiest period's of Nurmagomedov's coaching career.
Three of his fighters are involved in world title fights across the UFC and PFL.
By the end of this month, Dagestan could have two UFC champions if Islam Makhachev can defend his belt against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 and Umar Nurmagomedov defeats Merab Dvalishvili on the same card.
Umar is the cousin of Nurmagomedov and his brother, Usman Nurmagomedov, makes up the third Dagestani title fight with his PFL title bout against Ireland's Paul Hughes.
Earlier this week, Makhachev revealed he would rather avoid fighting Belal Muhammad and Shavkat Rakhmonov after UFC 311, should he move up to welterweight.

Makhachev won UFC gold for the first time by defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in 2022.
He has defended his lightweight title three times since, beating Alexander Volkanovski by decision before knocking him out in the rematch and submitting Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.
Dvalishvili, on the other hand, is heading into his first defence of the UFC bantamweight title since beating Sean O'Malley in September at UFC 306.
His opponent, Umar, is unbeaten in 18 professional MMA bouts and going into the bout fresh off an impressive victory over Cory Sandhagen in April.
Dvalishvili talked exclusively with talkSPORT.com about his fight this weekend at the Intuit Dome, home of the LA Clippers in Los Angeles.
The Georgian responded to comments from Nurmagomedov, who accidentally let slip in an interview that he trained with a 'broken' arm having suffered the injury late last year.

However, Dvalishvili, 34, was having none of it and had some strong words for his undefeated Russian opponent.
"No, first of all, I don't believe that because Umar was continuing to train," he said.
"He never stopped training like he said in an interview he was running and wrestling.
"He was feeling good, and I also saw that Henry Cejudo – he was holding the gloves for Henry, who was punching.

"Umar was punching back. I also just listened to an interview, he said he's fine.
"He is no problem. He's just mentioning these injuries and everyone deals with injuries! I have many but I am not talking about them. That was just something bulls***."
