Kim Sae-ron’s Family Speaks Out: Tragedy Forces Sibling to Abandon Acting Dreams
The bereaved family of Kim Sae-ron has urged the public to respect their privacy, revealing the devastating impact the tragedy has had on her younger siblings.
On March 17, Kim Sae-ron’s bereaved family held a press conference before filing a defamation lawsuit against entertainment journalist-turned-YouTuber Lee Jin-ho at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. The lawsuit addresses the alleged spread of false information that they claim deeply affected Kim Sae-ron, leading her to self-harm repeatedly before her passing.
Over the past three years, Lee Jin-ho uploaded four videos about Kim Sae-ron following her drunk driving incident, which have since been set to private. The bereaved family claims these videos contained false information, including allegations that Kim Sae-ron fabricated her relationship with Kim Soo-hyun as a “staged act.” Attorney Bu Ji-seok from Bu-Yu law firm, representing the family, called these statements “a blatant falsehood.”
In response, Lee Jin-ho denied the accusations in a video released on March 17, stating, “The facts are different. Not once did I ever claim that Kim Sae-ron staged her relationship with Kim Soo-hyun.” He further defended himself, saying, “Regarding the four videos I uploaded, not a single one was initiated by me. I only covered the matter after news articles were published and social interest arose.”
Despite his denial, Kim Sae-ron’s family remains firm in their decision to pursue legal action. Through the YouTube channel Garo Sero, they explained, “Our purpose is to restore the honor of a child whose life was destroyed in an instant by numerous false reports. Additionally, we hope to establish a legal precedent to punish malicious YouTubers and cyber-reckless content creators for their criminal behavior.” They further emphasized, “Kim Sae-ron never lied to the media, nor did she fabricate photos to spark dating rumors.”
Kim Sae-ron’s family strongly condemned Lee Jin-ho and other content creators for spreading misinformation, stating, “They fabricated false news that dragged a promising young actress and her family into despair. Gold Medalist (Kim Soo-hyun’s agency) even portrayed Sae-ron as a ‘mentally unstable girl’ who posted pictures with unclear intentions. Now that she is gone, even more false and vile claims have emerged, saying she was the sole provider for her family and that her family squandered the hundreds of billions of won she earned.”

The host of Garo Sero, Kim Se-ui, alleged that Lee Jin-ho had close ties with two of Kim Sae-ron’s former managers. He claimed, “One of them has been identified, but the other remains unclear. We suspect that the unidentified individual is from Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist. Lee Jin-ho always knew exactly where Kim Sae-ron was working at a café, which would have been impossible without an informant from within. There is a high possibility that Lee Jin-ho and Kim Soo-hyun are closely connected. The two former managers from Kim Soo-hyun’s agency hold the key.”
However, Kwon Young-chan, head of the Korea Association for Celebrity Suicide Prevention, countered, “We should not refer to them as ‘managers.’ These individuals attempted to create a new agency with Kim Sae-ron, but her father did not approve, and Kim Sae-ron never signed a contract with them. One of them even stated in a media interview, ‘I never assisted Lee Jin-ho. I tried to stop him and asked him to at least handle it in a considerate way if he had to report on it.’”

Kwon also raised suspicions about Gold Medalist’s actions, stating, “After Kim Sae-ron uploaded a photo on SNS, someone from the agency called her immediately, and she deleted it. It’s speculation, but they likely wanted to settle things. However, the next day, a certified legal notice was sent, and an explosive video about her appeared on Lee Jin-ho’s YouTube channel. Is it just a coincidence?”

Amid the ongoing controversy, Kwon stressed the need to protect Kim Sae-ron’s family. Addressing Gold Medalist’s claim that Kim Sae-ron’s aunt, who spoke in interviews, was not her biological aunt, he stated, “Do not attack the family under any circumstances.”
He added, “The bereaved family is deeply concerned about Kim Sae-ron’s two younger siblings. Both had dreams of becoming actors, but one has already given up on acting, and the other’s future is uncertain.”
Kwon concluded, “Attack me if you must, but leave the family alone. The bereaved family has entrusted everything to me. I have spoken with the mother directly. Please allow the family to survive.”
The bereaved family also revealed that they had recently discovered a second certified legal notice sent by Gold Medalist. They announced plans to file a lawsuit against Kim Soo-hyun’s agency and hold a second press conference. The notice allegedly contained threats stating that if Kim Sae-ron posted any photos related to Kim Soo-hyun on social media, contacted anyone from the agency, or caused any financial damage to tvN’s drama “Queen of Tears,” she would be held financially responsible for the full amount.
Kim Se-ui demanded a sincere public apology from Kim Soo-hyun’s side, stating, “We want an honest apology. Admit that you dated her for six years, from when she was a middle school second-year student in 2015, and apologize publicly.”
Meanwhile, Kim Sae-ron tragically passed away on February 16. In response to allegations that Kim Soo-hyun had been in a relationship with her since her teenage years, Gold Medalist firmly denied the claims, stating, “Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron dated from the summer of 2019 to the fall of 2020, after she became an adult. The claim that he dated her as a minor is false.” Regarding reports that the agency pressured Kim Sae-ron to repay the 700 million KRW (approximately 483,000 USD) penalty fees they covered after her DUI incident, Gold Medalist explained that the certified notice was merely a procedural formality and that the agency had absorbed the loss.
