On February 3, several Taiwanese media outlets, including the Central News Agency, reported that Barbie Hsu died of pneumonia caused by the flu.
Barbie Hsu’s younger sister, celebrity and actress Dee Hsu’s agency, issued an official statement to local media saying, “Our family traveled to Japan for the New Year, and unfortunately, my beloved and kind sister Barbie Hsu caught the flu, which led to pneumonia, and sadly, she left us.”
The statement continued, “I’m grateful to have been her sister in this life, taking care of each other and spending time together. I will forever be thankful and miss her. Goodbye, I will love you forever.”
Barbie Hsu gained fame in 2001 for her role as Dong Shan Cai in the Taiwanese version of “Boys Over Flowers,” called “Meteor Garden.” She was affectionately known as Taiwan’s “Geum Jan-di.”
Koo Jun Yup and Barbie Hsu were in a relationship during the early 2000s while both were active in their careers. However, they separated.

In 2011, Barbie Hsu married Wang Xiaofei, a wealthy businessman, and they had one son and one daughter. However, they announced their divorce in 2021.
Then, in 2022, Koo Jun Yup shared on social media, “I want to continue the love I had with the woman I loved 20 years ago,” and “After hearing about her divorce, I found her old number and reached out. Fortunately, the number was still the same, and we reconnected.” This led to their reconciliation, and they married later that year.

Koo Jun Yup appeared on tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” that same year, expressing his deep love for Barbie Hsu. He said, “I’m so thankful that after 20 years, she accepted me again. He also expressed his deep affection for her by getting tattoos that represented the coordinates of Taiwan, Barbie Hsu’s astrological sign, and her name. These tattoos symbolized their “settlement place.”
Barbie Hsu had attended a party hosted by a famous Taiwanese filmmaker in late January, accompanied by Koo Jun Yup. She had appeared healthy up until recently, making the sudden news of her death even more shocking.
