Four days after his passing, Laura Dern shared an emotional birthday message for David Lynch on Instagram to celebrate his birthday on January 20th, remarking, “Happy birthday, tidbit. I will love and miss you every day for the rest of my life.”
Dern was cast in Blue Velvet as a 17-year-old, and ever since securing the role, the late beloved director nicknamed her ‘Tidbit’. In 2019, Dern presented Lynch with his Academy Honorary Award alongside Kyle MacLachlan, who was also nicknamed ‘Kale’.
Dern expanded on this, saying, “His nicknames for us have stuck as we share the privilege of working with him our entire adult lives. Everyone who works alongside David feels that electricity. It’s his enthusiasm and passion that he brings to set that infuses you with that sense that you’re doing what you were always meant to.”
Lynch was known for having many muses throughout his career, and Dern was one of his most significant sources of inspiration. The actor first worked with Lynch when she appeared as Sandy Williams in Blue Velvet, released in 1986.
In the classic movie, Dern plays the daughter of a detective who becomes involved in an investigation surrounding the mystery of a severed ear.
Her career skyrocketed to new heights after her performance in the mystery thriller, and she was later cast by Lynch again in Wild at Heart alongside Nicholas Cage, portraying Lula Fortune, who goes on the run from her other after she hires a group of criminals to kill her boyfriend.
Lastly, Dern starred in Lynch’s 2006 film Inland Empire, playing an actress who begins to morph into the character she is playing on-screen. The director often concerned himself with subject matter relating to the film industry and the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, with Mulholland Drive being his most famous exploration of these ideas. The actor also played a part in his 2017 reboot of Twin Peaks: The Return, portraying the character of Diane Evans.
