Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson joins the King in Scotland for a surprise appearance â but will the âhot equerryâ marry this year?
King Charlesâ?? right-hand man, who is engaged to PR executive Olivia Lewis, arrived alongside the monarch in Aberdeen
Thompson, oft known as the âhot equerryâ, has a connection to the ancient heritage of the former infantry regiment, which was part of the British Army from 1881 to 1994, before it merged with the Queen's Own Highlanders. In 2006, it was merged into the Royal Regiment of Scotland â the 5th Battalion of which Thompson is a member. Both he and Charles wore kilts for their visit to the museum, which seeks to preserve the heritage of the Gordon Highlanders, and were welcomed by Jim Glennie, a 99-year-old D-Day veteran, who shook the King's hand warmly.

Charles is said to have been very invested in the visit, according to Colonel Charlie Sloan, chairman of the museum. âHe thoroughly enjoyed it and encouraged us to do more,â he told The Times. âIf you go by how nervous his equerry was looking about being late to leave, youâll know he was enjoying himself.â This trip marks the first time the King and Thompson have been seen together in 2025 â and will have prompted many fans of the royals to wonder if the nuptials of the so-called âhot equerryâ are imminent.
In October last year, those hoping to snag the gorgeous envoy were disappointed when Thompson confirmed his engagement to his girlfriend of a year and a half, Olivia Lewis. As per upper class tradition, Thompson shared the news in The Times, with an announcement that read: âThe engagement is announced between Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs Alan Thompson of Morpeth, Northumberland, and Olivia Rose, daughter of Mr and Mrs Simon Lewis OBE of Primrose Hill, London.â
Once included on Tatler's Social Power Index, Jonny Thompson joined the army aged 22 in 2006, and rose through the ranks to become the late Queen's most senior bodyguard. Following her passing in 2022, he was promoted to Super Equerry to the King, with major roles in the late Queen's funeral and King Charlesâ coronation. Thompson quickly attracted attention at the latter, looking just as dashing standing at Charles' side in his regimental kilt as he did at other royal events (lovelorn sighs could be heard across the country when he was pictured in morning dress, hanging out with Zara Tindall at Ascot).
No wonder, then, that when rumours circulated of a split between Thompson and his wife, Caroline, he became Britain's most eligible bachelor practically overnight. Soon, however, he was linked to Olivia Lewis, a PR executive who has worked for the King and Queen herself. She follows in the footsteps of her father, Simon Lewis â once the Queen's communications maestro and the man credited with managing her reputation in the period following the death of Princess Diana. He later switched from the Palace to politics, becoming former prime minister Gordon Brown's spin doctor.
