Actress Lily Collins and her husband, British director Charlie McDowell, recently announced the arrival of their baby girl via a surrogate, prompting a flood of congratulations and a handful of online attacks on Instagram. The couple faced unwarranted criticism from some quarters of the social media platform for their decision to use a surrogate, with accusations flying that likened surrogacy to "human trafficking".

One particularly harsh critique levelled at them was, "Youre not a Mother, youre a buyer!" Responding to the negativity, 41 year old McDowell took to the comments section to challenge the spiteful remarks about their route to becoming parents, hinting at the personal reasons behind their choice but maintaining their privacy.

On Friday, Collins, known for her role in 'Emily in Paris,' shared a heartfelt photograph of their new daughter with the message: "Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again.."

However, this did little to stall the surge of criticisms aimed at the pair for utilising a surrogacy service. Sharp rebukes in the comments included lines such as "rich people using women as incubators once again lmao," "Wow. Money can buy you literally anything, including human life," and bluntly, "Children are not bought."

Concerns over the ethics of surrogacy were also raised with one user commenting, "surrogacy harms impoverished women. People unable to conceive have the option of adopting millions of children that don't have homes. Renting the uteruses of women is immoral and should not be legal.", reports the Mirror US.

Charlie responded to the negative comments by expressing: "Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful. In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby- it's ok to not be an expert on surrogacy. It's ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It's ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume."

He rounded off his message with a light-hearted remark, saying: "And it's ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people's lives. That's all for now because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper."

While Charlie didn't delve into their reasons for choosing a surrogate, 35 year old Lily has previously been open about her battle with anorexia and how her aspiration to start a family was key in her journey to recovery. Women with a history of eating disorders can face greater risks during pregnancy, exacerbated if they're above the age of 35.

Speaking to US Weekly in 2017, Lily spoke honestly: "Everyone has a different form of recovery. I never had an 'aha' moment. My reason to finally start talking about [my eating disorder] was the moment I realized I wanted a family. I wanted kids. I didn't want this to be something I bring into that."

The couple has enjoyed three years of marriage and are celebrating the arrival of their first child.
