The 2025 MLS season kicked off on Saturday, with a litany of goals being scored across the league. There were plenty of intriguing matchups, but most eyes were on Inter Miami as Lionel Messi and co. opened up their season at home against New York City FC at home.
Miami got off to a scintillating start, going ahead in the fifth minute through Tomas Aviles. Then came trouble, as Aviles was sent off, NYCFC scored on the ensuing set piece and amplified their advantage early in the second half. Telasco Segovia sent Chase Stadium into pandemonium 10 minutes into stoppage time, though, as the game ended 2-2.

If you're wondering how Messi played, his fans will be happy to hear he was outstanding per usual. In fact, he assisted both goals and was the best player on the pitch. The numbers back it up, too.
77 touches
85% passing accuracy
2 assists
3 total shots
4 chances created
4 dribbles
This performance comes after he scored the winning goal against Sporting KC in the freezing cold mid-week in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match. It's great news for Miami that Messi continues to play at such a high level, but there's a level of concern that he still has to do just about everything.
Fafa Picault left in the 7th minute with an injury, while Luis Suarez missed a big chance and didn't do too much else. Segovia coming through in the clutch could lead to him getting more playing time, especially if Picault is out for a while.
Thankfully, Messi has the ability to carry the offense by himself. He's certainly off to a promising start in that regard.
