Cillian Murphy whispered a succinct yet powerful message to Adrien Brody at this year's Oscars before presenting him with the Best Actor award. Brody beat the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Ralph Fiennes to the coveted award at the 97th Academy Awards.
Murphy, last year's winner for his performance in Oppenheimer, praised all the nominees before announcing the winner.. He said: "I think I speak for all of us when I marvel at the performances of these five nominees for Best Actor who, at every time, made the right choice."
However, it was his private words to Brody that caught the attention of lip reader Jeremy Freeman. He reportedly told the actor: "Man, you're bl***y brilliant."
Brody's acceptance speech faced some awkward moments, after the Oscars music played twice to nudge him to finish up. "Please turn the music off. I've done this before," he fired back, assuring he wouldn't be "egregious" with his time, reports the Irish Star.
He continued, acknowledging his role as Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivor and architect, saying: "I'm here, once again, to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression and of antisemitism and racism and of othering."
During an impassioned speech, the star proclaimed: "I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world, and I believe if the past can teach us anything, it's a reminder to not let hate go unchecked."
However, before stepping on stage to accept his award, Brody was observed casually flicking his chewing gum at his girlfriend Georgina Chapman – a move that shocked viewers tuning in.
The online backlash was immediate, with one viewer venting: "Adrien Brody is a pompous a**. Flew his gum as he entered stage and cued the music off then proceeded to virtue signal. Lost all respect for him."

Another chimed in, criticising: "Adrien Brody throwing his gum to his girlfriend while going up to accept his Oscar."
Others also highlighted the gum-throwing incident, as one asked: "Huuuuuh, who's gonna pick up his gum?"
Stirring further curiosity around the actor's thought process, another added: "I would love to know the internal monologue Adrien Brody had in his head when he decided to throw his gum (?!) to his partner in the first row."
