PM's response to Trump tariffs: buy Aussie
By Tom Crowley
The prime minister hit the airwaves late yesterday with a parochial appeal, suggesting Australians should respond to Donald Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs by buying Australian products instead of American ones.
This "Australian made" theme is expected to be a feature of the federal budget in a fortnight, where the government is weighing how to get better local representation in public procurement contracts.
It has a distinctly election campaign flavour about it, and the PM also used the "Team Australia" framing to attack Peter Dutton, suggesting he was taking the Trump administration's side when he said that he could work out a deal to get Australia an exemption if elected.
