Liverpool tears send clear Man City summer contract message
Manchester City will have watched Liverpool's Champions League exit with interest as Mohamed Salah was left in tears at Anfield after defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
The best team in the world have been beaten by the best team in France.
Liverpool's march to the Premier League title will be uncontested and thoroughly deserved, and they may well add a Carabao Cup to their collection this weekend. But they are out of the FA Cup and have now been dumped out of the Champions League after a penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

After topping the Champions League in the League Phase, Liverpool were beaten at home at the next hurdle so must face a reckoning with the idea that they have been the best team in the world this season.
Let's be fair, they have been very good this season, and they came up against an equally impressive PSG side. However, the tears of their emotional players at Anfield show they know they have missed a golden opportunity.
Were those tears from Mohamed Salah a reflection on his uncertain contract situation? Are his Ballon d'Or hopes gone? Did it hit home that he has played his last famous European night at Anfield?
The same goes for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk who are out of contract, while Liverpool are facing a rebuild similar to City's when it comes to replacing iconic players approaching the end of their careers.
Arne Slot's new-look side has the league all-but wrapped up, but they may have to replace their talismanic full-back, iconic captain and the source of most of their goals which would gut the team's main influencers. Others, like Andy Robertson and Alisson, might also need replacing in the coming seasons.
City had their own Champions League failure and have already started their rebuild. Just as Salah and co. might have played their last Champions League game, so might Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. Others are at risk of not surviving the summer overhaul.
City spent £130m in January to get ahead of the game and look set to spend again in the summer. Decisions can be taken in good time on De Bruyne and Gundogan (and others) where Liverpool will be waiting to see what happens at the end of the season before making their own decisions.
Ruben Dias admitted that City have struggled to adapt to the mentality of not fighting for a title this season. That hurt should see them come back stronger next season where they will have Liverpool in their sights.
And now PSG have just reminded City that the Premier League champions-elect are still beatable, and that perhaps the level to retain the title is not as high as the level needed to challenge Real Madrid in Europe. City have been beaten comfortably by both Liverpool and PSG this term, yet those meetings were closer than the Madrid humiliation.

They know how far away they are from these rivals and what must be done to bridge that gap. Take Salah or Van Dijk or Alexander-Arnold away from Liverpool and that gap is automatically closer.
So if the first step is to restore themselves as domestic challengers, City know they must be ruthless with their summer contract decisions and be in a position to take advantage of any hesitancy from Liverpool over what is clearly an emotional decision over Salah and others.
Are Liverpool just a year or two behind City when it has come to needing a refresh of those iconic players? City will hope they have already given themselves a head-start on next season's title challenge.
