After making her return to the stage on March 13th at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, Lizzo has opened up about her mental health struggles and revealed, at one point, she “didn’t want to live anymore”.

In 2023, Lizzo was accused of sexual harassment by three dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez, who also claimed the singer had helped to create a toxic working environment. In a separate incident, documentary maker Sophia Nahli Allison alleged she started working with Lizzo in 2019 but shelved the project after two weeks due to the singer’s alleged behaviour. 

In another case, stylist Asha Daniels also named Lizzo in a bullying and harassment lawsuit. Lizzo has denied the accusations made against her and said on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast that she was “blindsided” by the legal filings.

Since the allegations came to light, Lizzo has largely remained out of the public eye but has now returned to music, beginning with the recent intimate show in Los Angeles.

During the performance, Lizzo said of her mental health struggles in this period: “About a year and a half ago — it’s so hard for me to talk about — I was in such a dark, deep depression.”

The singer continued: “I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore, and I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn’t want to be seen. Eventually, I got over that fear.”

Lizzo then explained how she attended a concert which gave her a monumental boost at a necessary time, recalling, “As I was walking through the crowd to get to my spot, something miraculous happened. Somebody, who I didn’t know, looked at me and said, ‘Lizzo, I love you’. And they reached out, and I reached back, and we hugged, and it felt so damn good.”

She added: “And after that experience I was like, ‘Damn, you can’t get this s*** on the internet, bro. This is the kind of love you can only get in real life.’ And I don’t share that story to gain some sort of sympathy. We’re beyond that, bitch. Look at me!”

The ‘Juice’ singer is set to play further intimate shows in the next week at the Irving Plaza at New York and First Avenue in Minneapolis. She’s also recently released the new single ‘Still Bad’.
