The Masked Singer: Toad in the Hole returns after walking off stage
The Masked Singer UK viewers were lost for words when Toad in the Hole stormed off stage this weekend after being voted out of the show.
Toad was revealed to be American singer Macy Gray, who was less than impressed to be voted off the show so early on in the competition. A source claimed bosses behind-the-scenes worked on encouraging Toad in the Hole to finish the show, whilst host Joel Dommett entertained the audience.
An insider claimed she was "almost shellshocked to start with" and was soon "gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version - when obviously she did brilliantly - so was totally blindsided." She was Sea Queen in the US version of the singing competition.
During the awkward moment of Macy returning to the stage looking unimpressed, fans took to social media to comment on what happened. One person wrote on X: "Well that was awkward… #maskedsingeruk." A second added: "Wow is Macy Gray really that heartbroken that she's been kicked off Masked Singer"
What exactly happened on The Masked Singer UK?
The day it was teased a star would storm off The incident was teased days before it was aired (Image:
ITV)Days before the episode was aired, it was reported that the show was "thrown into chaos" when a celebrity "stormed off" the stage after being voted out of the competition. At the time, the source said the incident was due to air on Saturday night. An outlet described the celebrity contestant as a "world-renowned star".
A source said that it was "absolutely bonkers," noting that the celebrity with the lower number of votes each week usually takes off their mask shortly after the result. The unmasked contestant then speaks to the panel and performs again, but this time without their mask on.
The source added to the Sun: "But instead this character turned around and shuffled off stage, which was hilarious in their costume obviously - but we were all stunned. We knew something was going on because we saw lots of to-ing and fro-ing with crew before the person eventually came back on stage."
Of course, days later, it was revealed to be Macy Gray.

ITV)Viewers tuned in on Saturday night but was soon shocked when Toad in the Hole stormed off the stage after being voted out. There was a shocking moment before Toad in the Hole's identity was revealed, however. When Joel Dommett announced that Toad in the Hole was going home, Macy didn't stay around for the customary reveal and instead walked off the stage.
One source said that bosses behind-the-scenes worked on encouraging Toad in the Hole to finish the show, whilst host Joel Dommett entertained the audience. The source said that the contestant was "basically gutted" to be leaving the contest "so soon" into the new series.
It was claimed she was simply "blindsided" by being one of the first to leave the The Masked Singer after reaching the final of the US version as Sea Queen in 2023. The insider claimed she was "almost shellshocked to start with" and was soon "gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version - when obviously she did brilliantly - so was totally blindsided."
Viewer reaction Viewers were shocked by the reaction (Image:
ITV)Fans were shocked when she stormed off the stage and took to social media to share their thoughts on what happened. During the awkward moment of Macy returning to the stage looking unimpressed, fans took to social media to comment on what happened. One person wrote on X: "Well that was awkward… #maskedsingeruk."
A second added: "Wow is Macy Gray really that heartbroken that she's been kicked off Masked Singer", while a third chimed in: "Oh everyone looks so awkward. She walked off stage. cannot deal #maskedsingeruk #maskedsinger." Another said: "Did anyone else feel awkward watching the last few minutes of that .. Macy Gray pls #maskedsingeruk."
Maya Jama and Joel Dommett's response (Image:
ITV)After the show aired, the stars of the show shared their thoughts, with Maya Jama taking to Instagram to share the clip. Captioning the video as the singer stomps past dumbstruck, host, Joel Dommett on stage, Maya teased: "Me at any minor inconvenience"'. The Love Island star can then be seen open-mouthed, telling fellow judge, Jonathan Ross: "Toad's off!" as Macy makes her exit.
Sharing his take, Joel told Paddy McGuinness on his BBC Radio 2 show that Macy shouldn't take things to heart. Opening up about the bonkers competition, he said: “It’s sort of a singing show but it’s also sort of a guessing show – so it kind of doesn’t really sit in either camp.
“And also if you’re a great singer and you make it through then that’s absolutely wonderful, but sometimes, like the case with Macy Gray, she has such a recognisable voice and she’s a legend so you immediately know who it is. So it’s kind of one of those where we all know who it is, she might as well go and then the other person can go through as we don’t quite know who they are. So the guessing game continues.”
Joel added to Paddy: “The funny thing is, I think it’s a win win scenario on that game – whether you go through to the final it’s a win as you’re winning it. But also if you go home early it’s a win because you get to go early and you get the same money.”
Another blow for the showIt was recently revealed that the chaos didn't just end with Macy looking unimpressed when she eventually returned to the stage. A TV insider has told The Mirror that the American singer refused to take part in the post-show interview, which celebrities have done over the years after leaving the show.
A TV source said: "It is normal for the celebs to answer some questions for a Q&A sent out by ITV but Macy didn't do it. This is only second time in history of the show this has happened so it shows how unhappy she was after the show."
