Rio Ferdinand tore into Harry Maguire for getting caught out twice in the build-up to Everton's second goal on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United went in at the break 2-0 down courtesy of goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure but were able to salvage a point after Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte struck back in the second half.
United were fortunate to escape Goodison Park with a point, though, given the hosts were in the ascendancy for most of the match. And Ruben Amorim's side also survived a late penalty scare after VAR told referee Andy Madley to reconsider his decision to award a spot-kick in additional time.
The mood was drastically different at half-time after another poor performance from United - and Maguire was singled out by Ferdinand for his poor defending.
âMaguire there, he canât stand there,â Ferdinand said while a clip of the defender standing upfield was shown in the build-up to Doucoure's goal by TNT Sports.
âYouâve got to run back towards your own goal, I couldnât understand that at all. Pace isnât a part of his game but then he gets a second opportunity to go and deal with it [when Onana parried the ball straight up]⌠doesnât go and deal with it.
âBut on the halfway line youâve got to run back.â
Former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson, who was analysing the game alongside Ferdinand, also criticised Maguire, adding: âLook at Doucoure, heâs up [for the header] before Maguire, thatâs why heâs scoring the goal.

United were almost down and out right at the death when Madley pointed to the spot after Ashley Young hit the deck in the penalty area. But the decision was overturned after Madley watched the incident back on the monitor.
The Premier League explained the process with a statement, which read: âVAR checked the refereeâs call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.â
