Writing an emotional statement, on social media, De Bruyne said: "I'll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player. Nothing about this is easy to write but, as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here and you deserve to hear it from me first. Football led me to all of you - and to this city.
"Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life.
"This city. This club. These people... gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what - we won EVERYTHING. Whether we like it or not, it's time to say goodbye.
‌
"Suri, Rome, Mason, Michèle and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant to our family.
"Manchester will forever be on our kids' passports and, more importantly, in each of our hearts. This will always be our HOME. So we can't thank the city, club, staff, teammates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter.
"Let's enjoy these last moments together! Much love, KDB."
‌
It's the end of an era for many fans. Reader Number13 says: "Thanks for everything KDB, you won the lot with us and you deserve a statue, too. You are now and always will be a LEGEND.
"Good luck to you and your family in whatever you move on to in your lives. Once a blue, always a blue."
Commenter BlueMerlin agrees: "One of our greatest players ever. Give him a statue! This is the end of an era, but we will keep on going."
‌
Bluecamp writes: "Thanks for all you have done for the club in your time with us - and I wish you and your family the best in the future. Thank you KDB." Bunnylover adds: "The greatest City player ever and the leading inspiration for my passion for this club. Thank you for everything KDB!"
Rougemont says: "We knew this day was coming but it's still very sad. We'll miss you but you're part of our history now and we'll always be grateful for what you've done for our club. I wish you and yours a very happy, healthy and peaceful future. PS. Where do you want your statue?"
For some, it was an end they'd seen coming. Cartmenez writes: "To be honest, I'm surprised he was offered a new contract, his legs are gone. The Premier League's greatest midfielder, thanks for all the good times you've given us, King Kev!"
‌
Toopcat says: "Sad day for City, one of the players that have made our last few years the best for our team. Will be hard to replace, but age and injuries take a toll on every player, let's hope some of our promising youngsters can be nearly as good as he has been."
Linda1865 writes: "A sad, sad day for us as City fans to hear this statement from KDB.
"For 10 years he's been at our incredible club - and he has given us everything. Over the last 2 years serious injuries have hampered his games and caused him immense frustration and pain, so I guess we knew this was coming, but never really wanted to face it."
