Manchester United had put preventative measures in place ahead of the game to try and stop away fans from entering the home sections.
That move came after uneasy scenes when Turkish giants Galatasaray came to Old Trafford and around 2,000 fans managed to snatch tickets reserved for home supporters.
Despite only receiving a five per cent ticket allocation for tonight's game, several thousand more ticketless fans travelled down to Manchester.
Hordes of Rangers supporters arrived in the city despite having many having no way of getting home due to the Storm Eowyn chaos.

And sadly, ugly video footage emerged of hooligans fighting on the streets in the hours before kick-off.
Inside the ground, clips began circulating of groups of Rangers fans on the concourse and in some cases, in the stands of the home sections.
Some were heard singing "your city is blue", with a pointed reference to United's rivals, Manchester City.
As one United fan exclaimed: "Why are there Rangers fans in the home sections?!"

Another supporter reported from inside the stadium: "Nothing to reassure you quite like the actual STEWARD warning you that there are loads of Rangers fans in your area before you take your seat."
A third fan observed: "There's a group of maybe 50 Rangers fans right next to the away end, but clearly in the home section. Clapping along to songs and a video circulating of them signing on the concourse as well. Incredible that United could let this happen again."

Several other fans remarked that the number of Rangers supporters who had managed to infiltrate the home end escalated into the thousands.
Given United's efforts to try and stop this from happening, it led to multiple people calling the club out for allowing it to happen.
One blasted: "Absolute disgrace the amount of Rangers fans in the home end tonight. Stewards unable to do anything as no support from the club or Greater Manchester Police."
Another said: "Letting Rangers fan into the home fans section - disgraceful."
And a third said: "Absolutely disgusted, Rangers fans sitting in home end, poor form."
Before a fourth said: "Current seating situation. Seems @ManUtd have no issue selling hospitality seats to away fans. Surrounded by Rangers fans. Shameful."

The unexpected numbers of away supporters inside the home sections also led to delays for fans trying to enter the ground for kick-off.
One fan posted a video of the commotion and said: "Queues five minutes before kick-off because Rangers fans are getting in the United ends."
