Marvel Is Quietly Paving the Way For a MCU Plot Twist With Help From the Scarlet Witch
A new comic may set up the Scarlet Witchâ??s return.
The Scarlet Witch has been missing in the MCU since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Though the movie ends with Wanda bringing down an entire mountain on top of her, implying her demise, a new comic reveals that there might be more at play than anyone knows about.
Fans have long suspected that the Scarlet Witch would return to the MCU, especially given her importance not only as a character, but to many interconnecting plots.
When the Disney+ series Agatha All Along revealed that one of Wanda’s twin sons--Billy Maximoff--was alive and extremely powerful, the internet lit up with theories about how and why Wanda could return. But now, the comic TVA (2024) #3--written by Katharyn Blair and Ryan North with art by Enid Balam and Pere Perz--is giving more hope to fans who are anxiously awaiting the return of the Scarlet Witch.
The MCU Wanda Maximoff is Back, But Not in the Way You'd ExpectThe TVA Has a Very Powerful Prisoner
TVA #3 was released on February 26 and has already made waves on social media due to the final page of the issue. As Spider-Gwen tiptoes into the TVA’s secret archives, Wanda is featured front and center in a stasis chamber. However, what makes this revelation significant is the fact that the Scarlet Witch depicted on the page is the exact same Wanda that was last seen in Multiverse of Madness. Her outfit, hair, and crown are identical to Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, which begs the question: after years, did Marvel just confirm MCU Wanda’s fate?
The TVA--Time Variance Authority--is an organization in the Marvel Universe that is tasked with preserving certain timelines and destroying--or “pruning”--others to avoid any multiversal disasters. If there is one person who not only posed, but caused, the biggest threat in the multiverse, it is Wanda Maximoff. The fact that Wanda is being held in stasis at the TVA implies that TVA agents swooped in at the very last second before Mount Wundagore crushed Wanda to death. After all, Wanda had already traveled through and altered multiple universes using her chaos magic, which is exactly the type of thing the TVA monitors and prevents.
"There is no other reason to include Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Scarlet Witch in the comics in a scenario that could perfectly explain her survival besides sowing the seeds of Olsen’s return."
In Multiverse of Madness, Wanda concocts a plan to use America Chavez’s ability to create portals through different universes in order to find her sons. However, Wanda is not looking for the same sons who disappeared at the end of WandaVision, as she believes they are dead, but instead is trying to locate a version of her boys who are alive in an alternate universe. The Scarlet Witch's actions become more desperate to the point where she kills important figures in these alternate universes, including The Illuminati. Her actions surely would have registered on the TVA’s radar as an urgent matter.
What Does Wanda's Appearance at the TVA Mean for the Future of the MCU?TVA; Written by Katharyn Blair and Ryan North With Art by Enid Balam and Pere Perz
Though the comics and MCU typically stay separate from one another, this significant revelation about Wanda appears to be connected to both, as the Wanda held by the TVA is different from the Wanda current in the Marvel Comics canon. Scarlet Witch--written by Steven Orlando with art by Jacopo Camagni--is the current solo comic series starring Wanda Maximoff, and Camagni’s Wanda is vastly dissimilar from the Wanda shown in TVA #3. There is no other reason to include Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Scarlet Witch in the comics in a scenario that could perfectly explain her survival besides sowing the seeds of Olsen’s return.
In Agatha All Along, any dialogue regarding the Scarlet Witch was very specifically phrased to avoid an outright confirmation of her death. Instead, Rio--who is Death itself--says that Wanda is gone, as in missing. Considering the fact that Rio personally collects every dead soul, she would be the first one to know if, in fact, Wanda had died at Mount Wundagore. Jac Schaeffer, the series creator for both Agatha All Along and WandaVision, addressed this very specific phrasing and what exactly Rio and Agatha know about Wanda in an interview with Deadline, stating that she was given instructions straight from the powers-that-be at Marvel.
It’s my opinion — and these stories will move ahead, and who knows what it will be — it’s my opinion that Agatha does not know [what happened to Wanda]. And yeah, it’s my opinion that Rio does. I think the word ‘gone" is important. I was instructed to use the word ‘gone.’
Pere Perez, the artist behind TVA #3, initially confirmed that the Scarlet Witch seen in the issue was in fact Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda. However, very shortly after, Perez backpedaled and stated that the Scarlet Witch in TVA custody was not the MCU Wanda, but a variant. In a since deleted Instagram post, Perez stated:
To address all the questions about it that I'm getting: yes, this is the same Wanda Maximoff played by Elisabeth Olsen [in] the MCU films. The other question, if it means that this comic is MCU continuity or any other issues about how this ties in with the movies or other comics, please ask the editor Jordan White, the writer Katharyn Blair or, I don't know…Kevin Feige?
Perez quickly uploaded another post wherein he said the Wanda in TVA #3 is not MCU Wanda, and advised readers to wait for issue #4 for more explanation. The conflicting information can be taken at face value or can be considered Marvel’s attempt to keep future plans regarding the Scarlet Witch and her survival under wraps as much as possible.
The Scarlet Witch's Return Could Tie Into Her Sons' JourneysOnce Billy Finds Tommy, Will They Look for Their Parents?
The implications of the TVA restraining Wanda could be massive for the MCU, should they plan to adapt the comic’s storyline into the movies or Disney+ series. As Wanda brought down Mount Wundagore, she destroyed every single version of the Darkhold in all universes, realizing the book would corrupt anyone who used the spells within. Destroying an item (or items, if referring to multiple universes) of such significance would certainly have ramifications for the timelines that the TVA monitors and protects. It would therefore make sense that TVA agents pruned the Scarlet Witch before she could complete what she expected to be her final act.
RelatedMarvel Doubles Down, Confirming Major MCU Theory With Help From the Scarlet Witch
TVA #3 confirms a fan theory about Wanda's fate in the MCU. Now artists are doubling down on the claim.
If the MCU adapts this version presented in the comics, it leaves the door wide open for information about Wanda’s whereabouts/imprisonment to leak and reach other heroes or, more importantly, her sons. Agatha All Along ends with Billy and Agatha setting out to find another member of the Maximoff family--Tommy. It stands to reason that once Billy and his twin are reunited, they would want to continue the quest to complete their broken family. Finding out information about their mother’s whereabouts with the TVA would lead to an emotional adventure in the MCU.
Whether the Scarlet Witch seen in TVA #3 is or isn’t Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda does not diminish the excitement about what the TVA comic series has in store. If the Scarlet Witch in stasis is in fact a variant of the MCU Wanda, then there will be a whole new backstory to uncover, leading to places unknown in the plot of the comic. Additionally, Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch series and the introduction of the TVA Scarlet Witch means there are now two Wanda Maximoffs in the same universe. With double the chaos magic, what could possibly go wrong?
